Agreed. Having them just as a purely role-playing choice is a great idea. Picking things like this just because stats help your preferred playstyle is wrong.

A dwarven Wizard/Cipher companion. Preferably driven completely insane by whispers from beyond, but able to hide that fact almost completely. Also, having an overly pragmatic npc or two, ready to betray their "tool" once they see fit wouldn't hurt.
