  1. Gromnir, did I make some kind of personal affront to you man? You seem to be in pretty hardcore attack mode.

Internet forum goers are always the minority when it comes to anything. Personally I know 3 other people who pledged on the PoE Kickstarter, none of them are regular forums goers (for anything really), they just heard "spiritual successor to BG" and jumped all in, and it probably wont even be on their radar again until they get the email saying "your Project Eternity game download is ready". I am more prone to hop on forums (though only sporadically), hence me stopping by here and seeing all the buzz.

Now, nowhere on the Kickstarter page do I remember reading "XP will only be given for completing quests, not for defeating monsters", though maybe I just missed it, I'm not above saying that could happen. But anyway, its not a stretch that one could properly assume that a game labeled as "spiritual successor to BG" would have XP for slaying bad guys, hence my surprise.

But I do apologize if my not being a regular forum goer somehow equated to pissing in your Cheerios.

  2. Wait, what??

I haven't been on here in a while (I've been trying to avoid any spoilers and just waiting for the final game to come out).

PoE wont have XP for combat? That seems kinda crazy to me. XP (along with loot) is the great motivator, it drives us to explore, it drives us to fight, it drives us to save the farmers from those perky goblins. This was marketed to us as a spiritual successor to the IE games, specifically BG, and dont get me wrong, I love doing quests and saving the princess, but I want XP from everything. I want it from completing a quest, I want it from picking a lock, I want it from disarming a trap, I want it from solving a puzzle, I want it for good roleplaying (the dialogue options), and yes, I want it from defeating monsters.

I really am surprised this is even an issue, especially for a successor game to BG. Hopefully it all gets sorted out by release. XP for everything!

Maybe I would like to play a more Aragorn style ranger (melee), but apparently rangers are shoehorned for ranged combat. D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder had that much better designed IMO.

IMO there's nothing particularly DnD-rangery about Aragorn. He doesn't dual-wield, doesn't use bows, and doesn't have an animal companion. He does have high charisma, rocks some healing skills, and kicks wraith ass, and he's obviously Lawful Good which would make him a paladin.

The 1st Edition AD&D Ranger is based pretty heavily on Aragorn (they dont get free dual-wielding or animal companions, they also aren't penalized for wearing heavy armor). The 2nd Edition Ranger on the other hand was far more Drizzt inspired, hence the dual-wielding.

Then again, to be fair, it could also be said that Aragorn DOES use a bow (though not as a primary weapon/fighting style), and DOES have an animal companion (remember his wild horsey friend that hated everyone until he came along and tamed him), also IIRC he does occasionally dual-wield his ranger sword with the elven dagger that is gifted to him.

  4. the horrible thing is that we got loads o' folks on these boards who justifiably complain 'bout certain publishers and developers generating empty and meaningless hype for their games and yet 'cause is obsidian, folks here is willing to  generate their own mystical hype for a maybe game for which you know absolute zero.  weird.

Show me a single example where Paizo has failed to deliver a hyped product. As I said above, there is a quantifiable reason why people take their word as gospel.

  5. Paizo has a proven track record of community interactment. The CEO, Creative Director, and pretty much everyone else in their company are on the forums all the time discussing things with their fans/consumers, and not just announcments and the like, they will comment on random forum discussions. It is to the point that when they say things, people take it as fact, such is the trust that they have invoked.

It's basically DnD rules wise since it's based on the DnD d20 system. I know nothing about the actual setting because I try not to pay attention to rip offs.

AFAIK they can't use the D20 system rules as its prohibited in the Open Gaming License; so the game would have to have its own rule system (presuming that they couldn't also license the D20 rules independent of the Pathfinder setting but that seems like a lot of rules...)

as others have mentioned, pathfinder Rules is effectively d&d 3.5.2. we like pathfinder settings, but their boards has become much like d&d boards in that a majority o' posts is dealing with rules debates and build optimizations. for many people, pathfinder is the rules far more than it is the setting. am curious how the paizo folks will satisfy their fans, fans who arguably equal or outnumber d&d fans, if a so-called pathfinder game would be using rules other than d20.

Gromnir, on the other hand, would be quite curious 'bout a pathfinder setting game using a variation on the rules obsidian has developed for PoE.

aside: we hope obsidian/paizo don't go the toee route and use existing pathfinder modules. many o' the pathfinder adventure paths is fantastic, but the last thing we wanna do is play a crpg version o' a module we already know.

    HA! Good Fun!

Yeah, part of me is wondering if this is going to be the telling of Rise of the Runelords in video game format. I'm not saying that wouldn't be cool, but I think I would prefer an original story. 10 gold says it is set in Varisia though.

  7. I didn't hear about this game until after it's Kickstarter was over, there's a good chance I would have backed if I had. With everything that has come out lately I can honestly say I am relieved that I didn't hear about it. Now I can wait until after it is released and have a chance to read the reviews.

  8. I have never heard of Masters of Magic before, if you had to compare this style of game to something else, is it more like the Warcraft RTS games, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Heroes of Might and Magic (preferably 3)?

    P.S. Those screenshots look pretty.

  9.

Nope. So far Mythic was one of the worst companies in terms of game support. Especially spectacular failures with Wrath of heroes and Warhammer Online.

What is this in response to?

Only thing I can think of is maybe he was confusing Shroud of the Avatar with Camelot Unchained, the kickstarter project being led by Mark Jacobs, the former head of Mythic and creator of Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online.

  10. To address some of the above comments. In 1E AD&D (1977) rangers didn't get two weapon fighting, the class was based almost completely off Aragorn. When 2E (1989) came about the ranger received a makeover that included them receiving free two weapon fighting (which has long rumored to be due to the growing popularity of Drizzt). Druids were able to use scimitars as weapons in 1E, long before the character of Drizzt was created. And Drizzt's teacher, Montolio, was also a ranger, not a druid.

Lol, well the record Torment set by being the fastest Kickstarter ever to $1 million didnt last long. The Veronica Mars movie project, lanched today, did it in under 5 hours and is about to meet its $2 million funding goal in less than a day.

I've never watched the show, but that pitch video made me a fan :)

It was a smart, witty, all around awesome show that was unjustly canceled 6 years ago. The first season of Veronica Mars is (IMO) probably one of the top 5 greatest seasons of a TV show ever. Give it a watch, then back the movie.

  12. In addition to the official earlier editions of D&D, there is an ever growing list of retro-clones and neo-clones based on the older editions. Here is a list of most of them off the top of my head,

    OSRIC (streamlined retro-clone of 1E AD&D rules)

    For Gold & Glory (retro-clone of 2E AD&D)

Labyrinth Lord (retro-clone of Basic D&D)

    Swords & Wizardry (retro-clone of 1974 Original D&D)

Castles & Crusades (1E neo-clone, mixes just a smidgeon of 3E in there, although very rules lite)

Adventures Dark & Deep (1E style neo-clone, an attempt to make 2E AD&D "as Gygax would have made it")

    Myth & Magic (2E neo-clone with a bit of 3E included)

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG (Basic D&D neo-clone, hardcore style with a old swords and sorcery novel feel to it, magic is dangerous)

Hope this helps and good gaming.

  13. Beholders and Mind Flayers are really the only two big time D&D monsters that PE can't use, as they are IP protected by WotC, there are others on that list also (like the Gith races) but none of them are of the caliber that beholders and mind flayers are. Someone mentioned eariler Drow not being available, that is untrue as drow are part of the Open Gaming License, for example Pathfinder has drow in its bestiary and in its campaign setting. Pretty much every other standard D&D "monster", the good folks at Obsidian could use free and clear (and I hope they do).

  14. We are supposed to have six races available for play. So far we know what four of the six are going to be, Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Godborn. I wanted to start a thread for speculation on the other two races. I think at least one of the two will be a small race, something like Halflings or Gnomes, with the other one possibly being something kind of new. What do you all think? If I have missed an update and they have already announced the last two races, feel free to share that information.
