  1. Then I shall slay them all and rebuild it with actual maidens!

And so did Saint Xantomas free Maiden Falls of the foul daemons that dared to disguise themselves in the form of beautiful women. There to wipe away the memory of such horrible acts did he open the greatest brothel this land has ever known. Thus did he work day and night building and on the last day he casted his most powerful holy magic to turn the waterfall into a place of healing where wounds and diseases were wiped away. Truly will his deeds will be remembered with the highest reverence and respect.

A long time ago lived a woman next to the Maiden Falls, her fair features were of such great renown that many still believe the place's name is in her homage. But that isn't true: the woman killed herself upon hearing the death of her lover, it was then that wicked spirits took her form and haunted the area. For a long time they seduced travellers into falling from the top of the waterfall, but Saint Thomas' passing during a famous spiritual journey purified the place and slew the demons without bloodshed.

Ever since, the people of Maiden Falls are dedicated to the memory of that journey - turning the place into a tourist trap and a brothel. As it turns out Virtue doesn't sell.

I propose hijacking this post and turning it into creative stories behind the map location names.

  2. I think it's pretty widely agreed that a very polar "Ultra goodie goodie that never accepts a reward" vs "Death incarnate that insults and murders everybody he meets" story isn't very good. Obsidian knows very well how to do good and evil choices that are fun and make sense. The writing and story in their games are always stellar.

I don't think we have much to worry about in that department, I just hope that there ARE options and this isn't as the OP suggested, simply a good guy saves the world story because of limited resources or something.

  3. Thinking everyone in this will have some sort of magic to enhance their abilities, given the emphasis on magic coming from the soul, and your party being composed of strong souled individuals. Doesn't mean the magic available to the classes can't be very different. Your fireball slinging wizard could be matched with a perception altering rogue and a warrior that can turn his sword into a lightsaber.

I suddenly thought of Dak'kon and his karach/chaos-matter blade that he altered with his mind.

See now that's pretty awesome, I'd be OK with a warrior type class who uses his soul to make his sword AWESOME. I think people may be jumping off the deep end too fast with the doubt and panic. This game could end up really fantastic and unique, traditional fantasy haters be damned.

  4. I think that steampunk technology if done well is a fantastic addition to a fantasy game. Even more than magic, such technology could be rare and difficult to understand. Your average soldier with a looted musket wouldn't have any idea how to operate the thing, wouldn't know anything about gunpowder or how to make it, what about cleaning or other maint stuff? Of course he'd just prefer his crossbow. But if one of your characters is a craftsman or tinker/engineer type character he can perhaps figure it out and use this technlogy for your party.

An Arcanum-like technology vs magic story could really be incredible. I doubt the main game is going to go this way, but I'd love to see an invading steampunk nation or hidden society (think fantasy Brotherhood of Steel?) as a major chapter or side quest or even expansion material.

If steampunk is too much for some people I'd be happy with musket and blunderbuss wielding pirates somewhere in the game. Which brings me to my next random thought, forget houses man I want a ship.

  5. It'll be fine, it's going to be close to funded in 24 hours or less now very soon and that's just from us hardcore fans who heard the news right away. More people over the next month as word spreads will fund at least the 20-25 bucks because they want to support something they love and get it at a discount to boot.

Plus there's always stretch goals and tempting backer rewards to draw people in now.

  6. Too much voice acting is one of the things killing RPG's today. This is supposed to be a throwback game, a classic deep RPG from the days of yore. READING IS NOT A BAD THING. Baldur's Gate and Planescape levels of VO are fine with me, read the greeting and first couple lines of conversation with important characters to give us some idea of what the character sounds like. At most. More than that and you limit the quality of the conversations and spend waaaaaay too much money far better spent on other things.

Stretch goals should be things like additional platform support, custom tools, and a bigger, deeper, more complex game. More artists, more writers, stick with the plan.

  7. I'm all for innovation and creative new things but I don't wan't to see it get out of control. I don't want my only options to be a cat person, a plant person, or a fish person. I LIKE the classic fantasy races and like the twist some recent games have put on them, Witcher and Dragon Age 1 have been mentioned.

My vote would be don't stray too far from the recognizable fantasy we all know and love but there's no need to stick with the cliche dwarf and elf stereotypes.

I want a base of a recognizable fantasy world with some exotic or just plain awesomely epic races/monsters/villains/allies added into the mix.
