  1. I'd like a sincere answer to this question, though I know not all of you are of the same mind: what do you want to spend (in-game) money on?

    • HIghest quality equipment (but not unique)
    • Unique crafting materials (that require high crafting skill and other pieces that cannot be bought)
    • Stronghold (hiring mercs, merchants, concubines, etc. and infrastructure related stuff)
    • Quests!! (bribes, alternative solutions, mercs that clean areas)
    • Very fast travel (for special occasion if time matters)
    • Bail out in game economy and thereby gain control over certain aspects of in game politics etc
  2. I know nothing about Linux except that the people who use it love it.

Not all of them... ;) Even if all OS were supported equally i would choose WIndows 7 over Mac OS over Linux.

I loved Linux when i was playing around with it. For a productive everyday use it's rather the opposite feeling.

It's great if you have only little money to spend on IT stuff (eg when you are a student). Then you can buy a 8 years old IBM Thinkpad and optimize the hell out of it.

  3. i wish in the near future majority of games will only be released for gnu/linux.

releasing exclusively for one os is just as bad as releasing exclusively for the other

Well, the difference is that linux is free and therefore there's no financial barrier to using it. The barriers are it's perceived difficulty, the lack of games, and the effort involved. The former is no longer true, unless you want it to be (Hooray for Arch Linux!), and the second is a vicious circle. Since I install linux on everything I can find for the fun of it, I'm not one to comment on the final statement!

Currently playing Planescape Torment on linux

I disagree, but let me say first that i actively use Mac, Windows, and Linux. I also used the awesome Arch Linux for some years until a careless pacman update broke my custom configured xmonad WM and i had to invest two very long days that i did't had to fix it. Then recently i had to reinstall Linux to test some scientific software. I didn't have the time, so i choose Ubuntu (though ArchLinux was very, very tempting!). So i did the 5 click installation on some free partition i reserved for this case, booted up the OS, and started seting up my software. Then the system froze - completely. Rebooting i realized that my system always freezes after 1-10 minutes. Few hours research later i learned that the chipset of my pci wireless adapter causes the problem. I have (or had) the standard $15 bestselling adapter from amazon (a no-brainer purchase). There was no fix, so i had to buy a differend adapter, wait until it arrives, open my PC etc. It was a lot effort for a very trival thing. Now i could give you several other examples (don't worry, i won't! ;) ), but i hope you see my point that Linux is not for everyone. I even stopped blaming anyone (Linux devs or Hardware manufactures) for these issues, i just adapted. Not for ideological reasons, but because i don't have the time anymore as others expect me to produce results and not tinker around with my system. I loved Arch Linux and recommend it to anyone how wants to learn the interior workings of an OS and custom optimize his system to the highest level. Can be a lot fun! But Linux is far, far away from being suited for mainstream use.

And no! No software should ever be used to hook people to some particular OS by force! Strange to hear such ideas from a Linux enthusiast.

  4. You don't play Baldur's gate if you use megamod. You play Baldur's gate 2 with extra content. All the magic of BG1 is lost.

Sorry, but this doesn't make much sense. Why is

joining both games that tell one progressive story

+ allowing the player to chose from all classes and magic spells that were introduced later right from the beginning

+ adding some banter that explains the changes of your companions characters between BG1 and BG2

+ restoring the content that was cut from the game

making BG1 like BG2 with extra content?

Again, i do NOT recommend installing the standard, full, or tactical version of the megamod. I do recommend installing the recommended version which was selected by the huge BG community to provide the most immersive, polished, and least obtrusive game experience. But you can even handpick all mods you want or not in the Big World Installer which then downloads and installs all mods you selected in the correct order.

If you do not install the mod then you have to play the whole BG saga with one of the very few BG 1 classes or have to make a completely new character for BG 2!

Moreover some companions will have "changed" without providing any explanation.

  5. Temple of Elemental Evil is virtually unplayable without mods. For example, you can hire followers in addition to the 5 you create at the start of the game. They all automatically take a share of any loot you get from chests and corpses which is fine until they become over-loaded and won't sell, drop or distribute what they've picked up. Ever. So your hired help are useless after the first encounter or two unless you plan to never loot anything while they're with you.

The Circle of Eight mod pack fixes a bunch of issues and despite not having much story to it, ToEE was a great turn-based tactical combat game.

That's one exception to the rule.

    And no floyd, just no.

You don't really provide a much explanation for your opinion.

  6. AAA budget RPGs like FFXII cost between 30 and 50 million; games like GTA 4 cost 100 million. Gears of War, at $10 million, was considered very cheap. Double Fine's own Psychonauts, a cartoony-looking adventure game from 2005, cost 12 million.

    Keep things in perspective.

And still this does not imply better quality nor that PE will be sub par. I still expect an highly atmospheric art design. I never expected mocap and full voiceover...

  7. Unity will not dictate the art direction of the game. Our artists, graphics programmers, and directors will. And let me say, they are some of the best in the business.

This is similar in which Onyx did not prohibit from making a South Park like visual game even though a 3D fantasy dungeon crawler was made with it. ;)

    Hi!

Can you tell us more about the backgrounds? Will they be prerendered? Will the camera be fixed?

  8. First time players should play the game as they are.

NO MODS! They're old games so you should put up with how they were to understand the magic.

Usually i'd agree, but not here. The recommended version of the megamod doesn't add much to the game storywise. It just makes it look better and joins all parts together in one single consistent game. The addition of NPC banter and Unfinished Business adds very much to the atmosphere but in an unobtrusive way.

  9. Take them all like I did. 9 isometric classics for around 30 bucks, that's great. And because of the climbing savings for each added game in the promo it's not really worth to take less than 9. Try it on your own on gog (I think 7 games are even cheaper than 6 games because of the climbing savings....)..... ;)

    ^this. But start with Baldur's Gate ;)

  10. I'd recommend to get all BG games unless you want the ipad version. Why not wait for the enhanced edition?

Because for BG there exists the megamod. This is a collection of all BG mods unified in one installer. It joins both BG games, all expansions and mods in one gigantic game. It provides the classes, spells and better graphics already in BG 1. It includes excellenly written party banter in BG1 (in vanilla BG1 there is no banter at all).

You don't have to select all mods by your own. Just pick the recommended preselection.

  11. Assuming (and hoping) that dialogue will be stat based as in Planescape i'd like to have the PC always start NPC interactions even if he is not the front character.

In IE games this was quite cumbersome, as the "stupid fighter" always started the talking if the whole group was selected. In other words: Don't make the front character the lead per default, please.

Aside, i like above ideas to give formations more tactical depth via stats.

  12. There has been a lot talk about the number of companions and the quantitative aspects of the game in general. This is and will remain a rather low budget project and i love to see the focus completely on quality and not quantity. What i want to see (again) are diverse and believable interactions with and between the companions as well as reaction to the environment. Let me give you an example from the NPC banter mod for Baldur
