  1. I absolutely despise achievements which sole purpose is to applaud the player for picking a lock or opening a door, and other such nonsense, and I wholeheartedly believe they are a waste of developer time.

That being said I acknowledge the fact that there are games out there that get achievements right, but I do not believe there's a place for them in PE. And I'm actually quite concerned to see that the Steam version will feature achievements but the GOG version won't. Which probably means the Steam version will get a bunch of junk achievements.

  2. Could Gods interrupt/interfere with mechanics somehow?

For example, if you'd try to pickpocket an entire town, a God of Shadows could come in and wave "its" finger "No no". If Gods could fulfill such a use, it could both be fairly (and magically) reasonable for the developers to design "restrictions" that'd be content by itself. In Journey, there is such a mechanic, when you try to walk outside the screen you get pushed back by this invisible wind. Many gamers don't mind it, and is immersed by its feature. Kind of like that, but with Gods  :brows:

If you Rest all the time, you end up in the Realm of Dreams or something, transcending into spiritual form (and it wouldn't be a nice place to be at because, presumably, a God could've sent you into a trap).

Saving and reloading too much could send your character into a Doctor Who loop, meeting or seeing yourself as you moved before as a "Ghost", before you reloaded. It doesn't necessarily have to happen all the time, but Gods could function in "random encounter" scenarios and "restrictive" scenarios such as the Pickpocket scenario.

For example, imagine a God being annoying towards you, obstructing you on your path, so you decide to go after it and take it down. You take it down and take a breather, no more annoyance. Likewise, you could've thought you took down the God, but in fact you took down another one, manipulated by the first one to take out the other one.

What is it with you and punishing players?

  3. Neither dog nor cat person here, I like dogs and cats, but I don't like cat-sized dogs, and for some reason feel uncomfortable in the presence of dog-sized cats.

I don't think an animal is a proper party member for an Obsidian game, there is only some much talkietalk you can do, and even a well done animal would have the personality of a mid 1980's NPC, because there is only so much an animal can communicate. Given the choice between a talking spirit bear fighter and a humanoid companion that has interests and problems which are, well, human, I'd chose the later. Same goes for psychopathic killer-robots, or even sillier stuff like walking trunks or jigging mushroom-men.

A ranger companion, a familiar, or an inventory-only pet (like a certain megalomaniac stumpy tail rat) are okay, and why not allow permanent summons (Geneforge anyone?) If you want a carrion crawler pet, how about you summon one, and cast a permanency spell on it?

In Obsidian's defense, I'd say Okku from Mask of the Betrayer was a pretty awesome companion. Other than that, I agree with you.

  4. I hope they implement this system, or atleast something like it: http://www.pocketplane.net/virtue

Basically, you have a reputation and a virtue meter. Reputation is what the other people think of you, and virtue represents the morals of the party. So you could be a psychotic killer but still be a respected member of society because nobody knows about it.

I promise if they go for a karma system I'll fart in a balloon and send it to their HQ.

  5. That pretty much sums it up right there. Why do people care so much about how someone else plays a singleplayer game.

Because we want this game to be fun, not just for us, but for everyone. And while we can't prevent people from ruining their own game (as they are allowed to do), If it's within the power of the game designers to encourage players to play the game in a way that will be more enjoyable for them, why shouldn't they?

Wait, so you're telling us that you know better than we do about what is best for us when it comes to having fun?

"NO! You're having fun the WRONG WAY! Do this instead you quick saving philistine!"

Are you out of your ****ing mind?

I think sometimes the devs do know better, yes. Study after study shows that people are really bad at determining what will make them happy. If a player intends to save whenever the game gets a little challenging, then yes, I think I know better, I think the devs know better and they would be well within their rights to protect the integrity of their game and save people from themselves.

The problem lies in that there is no clear solution which only works against the exploiting of features, but doesn't punish players who are using features the way they're intended.

So you and your little protégé knows what's best for everyone? how cute.

What an utterly useless thread, sadly one of many on this particular forum.

  6. If done in an intelligent and realistic way, why not. But I think they should restrict it to certain unique spells so it doesn't degrade into; "Blast, I've run out of [ingredient], I can't cast any fireballs!". Or maybe you should be able to "slot" ingredient(s) into spells, enhancing it or creating a new spell entirely. Doesn't necessarily have to be combat related.

Like, you slot a powdered ice golem heart into your water blast 'card' and use it on a river, the river freezes and allows you to walk over it for a short ammout of time.

  7. Personally, I'm in favour of the "Celtic model" where gender mattered way less than individual prowess when it came to roles. But that is just my particular taste/opinion, doesn't make it right or wrong :)

I like that, believe me, I do. But I just feel it would be a little bit.. too much "rainbow" if all these races, cultures, religions, & politics found a way to coexist peacefully with eachother. I want it to be some strife in the world, one the the player can influence and hopefully change, for better or worse.

I can tell you now I would go straight for the "Celtic model".

  8. A: How do you save a Gnome from drowning?

    B: I don't know...

    A: Good!

Something like that? Or that elves steal babies and use them to fuel their sinister, evil rituals. Never ask a Dwarf to hold your wallet if it has any gold in it. Typical racial prejudices. Not sure anything similar could work well with genders though (not without just parroting real world issues and resorting to common stereotypes).

Both. I mean, why not? It has been done plenty of times in video games, books, & movies, old a new alike. It adds flavour to the game.

Easy. Let's think about unusual forest dwarves. Men are fishermen and woodworkers, while women are hunters and warriors. It just historically happened to be so.

And now your male character meets them for the first time. Dwarven women laugh you off, since a man carrying a sword is stupid and a farce to them, they are sure that a man simply isn't capable of warfare. And dwarven males outright disrespect you for "lowering yourself to brutish fighting", instead of being a true craftmaster and devoting yourself to creation like all men in their opinion should.

Who are these forest dwarves and where might I find them? they sound like my kind of people.

  9. I disagree on this one.

You could argue that they should also put racial prejudice against black people in the game but no game developer is going to do that because its unnecessary and we are past that in the real world. This isn't the real world, this is a video game with its own world created by Obsidian, they can make it different.

I do believe that by racial prejudice the OP meant something more along the lines of "Dwarves hating Elves", which is quite common.

  10. I like your ideas, and I have no doubt Obsidian will implement "gender prejudice" into the game seeing as it will feature several different cultures.

One potentially interesting theme could be about the humans and Elves who arrived from across the sea only to find Elves living there, and the immigrant Elves feel closer akin to the humans than to their distant cousins, most likely because of their cultural/religious/political differences.
