  1. Actually, apart from what has already been discussed here, I really liked the way things were handled in NWN: Hordes of the Underdark.

At first it all seemed like a generic fantasy tale where you go into the dungeon and kick some ass because you're an adventurer and some buggers have been attacking the inn you're in, plus they've stolen your gear. After that you realize there's "greater evil" that will destroy or conquer everything so you descend into the Underdark trying to fight it. And then comes the best part when you get killed and are stranded in the Ninth hell or something. At that point it becomes really personal and you know you have a reason to keep fighting.

So, at one point the obligation to the outside world to save the Realms from the bad guys is being enhanced with the inner necessity to avenge your death and regain your life.

  2. In the hypothetical situation that BioWare and EA agree to let one of BioWare's designers to come work on PE with Obsidian, that could only be good news for the project. Hype and pledges will go up, thereby allowing more and better content to be released in the game, people will talk even more of this phenomenal RPG in the making, it'll all feel like a big high-school reunion.

  3. L0L Bashing BIO yet Obsidian is using BIO's ahrd work with the IE/BG to try to sell this kickstarter. Even try to take the credit for BG. Heh.

Well, that's part of the reason I'm suggesting this. If PE is really about being a spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine (created by Bio) games, namely IWD, PS:T and BG, wouldn't it be better for the development team to represent this? I know this is an Obsidian idea, but the same could be said about Wasteland 2 being a inXile idea. Still, that didn't stop the guys there from taking Obsidian's Chris Avellone to do some work on the game's design. I don't see a problem with that.

May I also say that the addition of Chris to the Wasteland 2 team was in fact done as a stretch goal and the project got considerably more backing in a short amount of time solely because of the fans' reaction to the names of Chris and Obsidian.

What makes you think the addition of, say, James Ohlen from BioWare (who was the Lead Designer of Baldur's Gate 2) to the PE team will be somehow worse than the addition of Chris from Obsidian to the Wasteland 2 team?

  4. This has been going great so far, but what if even more of the legendary designers of godly RPGs can be drawn to Project Eternity? We have Josh, Chris and Tim, but what about someone who has worked on the Baldur's Gate series? Maybe we could bring in more great designers/writers to this game by reaching a stretch goal, just the way Chris Avellone got added to the Wasteland 2 team.

Someone already mentioned the possibility of inviting George Ziets to Eternity.

What about a stretch goal that adds people from the BioWare team who were responsible for the amazing BG series, as well as for the engine that started it all - the legendary Infinity? I know I'd like James Ohlen on board, and even if that won't be easy, nothing is impossible.

  5. I think what a lot of people dont realize is that the multiplayer experience is what partially made some of the original IE games so great, or last so long. Even years later buddies of mine will get together to play these games coop.

    This.

People say PS:T did well without multiplayer. While that is true, it doesn't mean it couldn't have done even better with multiplayer. Let's take the case of NWN2: MotB. In every sense (besides the engine and graphics), this game was a true successor to what PS:T stood for. It had a deep personally engaging storyline and it had well written companions which were significant to your journey. I played MotB together with a friend - the feeling was one of the best I've ever had in a PC game. Nothing ruined my immersion. It was actually better than playing the game on my own (which I've also done) because I had a *real* person there with whom I shared the responsibility for the hard choices we had to make. It felt like a real old-school pen and paper RPG session.

I don't see why PE shouldn't have a multiplayer *option*, unless that turns out too expensive or time-consuming to handle.

  6. In the BG and IWD series other players are part of your 6-men party. Basically, you have to decide which of the NPC companions to leave out of the party in order to take your friends. You can also give them control over other NPC companions, e.g. you can control Jaheira and Minsc and let your friend control Aerie and Imoen.

In NWN and NWN 2, other players are extra party members. So, for example, if the maximum party size is 4, when your friend comes on, you'll have a 5-men party. It's again possible to let other players control NPC party members.

  7. They have not really started with the game. That is why you will get it in 2014 and not tomorrow^^

I know they have not started working seriously. That's why I'm expecting mostly articles and interviews with the developers describing the setting for Eternity in a little bit more detail, as well as the occasional piece of new concept art. I think that should satisfy most of the people saying that we don't have enough info to pledge (or, to pledge more). ;)

  8. With the right amount of new information (videos, screenshots, concept art, articles, etc.) released in due time, I think Obsidian won't have much of a problem getting to 1.6-1.8M. After that it won't be so easy.

Perhaps a stretch goal which entails adding more of the legendary designers of old-school RPGs (ex-Obsidian, ex-BIS, ex-Bioware) to the Eternity development team (ala the Wasteland 2 team including Chris Avellone) may actually induce people to up their pledges to 2.5M and beyond. :)

  9. BioWare might have been good if they didn't betray everything they stood for and sold out to EA. Alas we have hope yet with companies like Obsidian staying true to their path and new rising tallent like CDPR.

BioWare have done a great job with a lot of games: BG 1 & 2, NWN and NWN: HotU, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age (and especially DA2, in my opinion) the Mass Effect series as a whole... Obsidian (and Black Isle, respectively) have also done a fantastic job with games such as the Fallout series and New Vegas in particular, Planescape: Torment, IWD 1 & 2, KOTOR 2, NWN 2 and MotB, etc. For me, as a gamer who enjoys great games with immersive storytelling and meaningful choices, the names of both BioWare and Obsidian (Black Isle) have always symbolized quality. I've spent countless hours in the worlds created by the brilliant people at these two studios.

Therefore, I've never understood the reason behind fans of either studio (or even of both studios) pitting the two companies against each other, e.g. saying Obsidian always have crappy releases and leave unfinished stuff, or, claiming that BioWare have sold out all they ever represented and are now producing crappy games. While there's always a grain of truth in every legend, I don't see how it could be satisfying to keep on telling these stories.

Back on topic, I really don't think it'll be Fallout. I can't find any hidden meaning in the words that have been released so far that links to something of that sort. The art itself looks a lot more like a Baldur's Gate kind of thing. I'll be really surprised if this game doesn't have a medieval fantasy setting.

  10. There's zero chance of them actually using IE again - as Enoch says, the 2D hires are still for Onyx games.

The question is whether Onyx 2D could deliver something similar to IE, and I think it could, though obviously with design differences.

Interesting. The mystery remains, however. What do the guys at Obsidian want with 2D artists? If Project X is not an IE game, could it be a sequel to one of the IE games running on the Onyx Engine and so, therefore, more 2D artists will be needed? Also, the words on the main page lead me to believe that this is going to be a fantasy title rather than Fallout or Alpha Protocol.

  11. I've been lurking around these forums, but I decided to register now because I wanted to share something I noticed just a few minutes ago: Obsidian are hiring a 2D Environment Illustrator and a 2D Environment Intern. Could this be connected to the present countdown timer for Project X? Since everyone started talking about Kickstarter and this quote from the Obsidian KS profile is being thrown around:

Prior to Obsidian, each of the owners worked for Black Isle Studios as production, design, management, and programming staff, having worked on the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment series.

We loved working on those games, and feel there's a real nostalgia for them, and we're looking to you for help to bring them back!

Could we be witnessing a comeback of the legendary Infinity Engine games?
