  1. It's still better than going through the whole of Blighttown again isn't it? By the you reach bosses, you always have shortcuts open and can usually run past monsters if you don't want to deal with them, since you know where you're going.

Well since you don't have and intention of PVP ( and GWFL pretty much ruins most of the trying anyway) your DEX/INt build can be a normal DEX build for NG and you only go DEX/INT for NG+ :D.  Also try bleed weapons on bosses like Asylum demon, even a simple dagger works fine.

Cestus only seems too masochistic even for me. Especially because you basically must create a what i call a weapon master build ( 40 str/40 dex ) to get full damage from it, even then you don't get more than 336 damage, not to mention you can't 2H it.  But if you're set in that path, you might as well get Dragon Bone Fist made from golem's soul and master that R2 attacks. Also pick up a Dark Hand in New londo, so you have a shield that's not actually a shield.

I skipped most of Blighttown my first time through the game. I never realized where the path down into Lower Undead Burg was so I went through the back entrance from the Valley of Drakes. Made for minimal frustration finding my way down though having to trudge through the swamp itself without the ring was still a pain in the ass. Even more so when you don't have any purple moss to cure poison status.

Cestus only has been pretty fun so far actually. It's been doing decent damage though I can see it possibly being an issue later in the game. I suspect I'll be making much more use of weapon enhancements like gold pine resin to boost that damage. I'll likely grab that Dragon Bone Fist at some point, though I recall that the Cestus has better damage than it does anyway. I'm torn on the Dark Hand. Yes, technically I suppose it's a "fist" weapon, but it kinda seems like it would be breaking the spirit of the run if not the actual rules. It's still a ways off so we'll see. :p

  2. Got my latest purchases downloaded. Went as far as trying to start Dark Souls before uninstalling it again and wrote it off as a complete loss. Starts up in windowed mode (any menus if it got any, outside the visible area), warns not to switch off because it uses save points (WTF? This is the 21st century) and the single dooming feature of insisting that I create a new GFWL account... gave it the middle finger and got rid of it again. At least it was dirt cheap.

Hope I got luckier with Mortal Kombat and Enslaved ;)

Dark Souls almost constantly saves. Open your inventory? Saved. Defeat a mook? Saved. Rest at a bonfire? Saved. The windowed thing is kinda weird. It always starts up in windowed mode for some reason even if you set it to fullscreen. It'll switch over at some point during the initial loading. I have the intro videos disabled so I don't remember the exact point it swaps over anymore. The menus being outside the visible area isn't something I've experienced so I can't comment on that.

GFWL does suck. I don't think they've said what they are going to do when the service shuts down yet, but since the sequel is supposed to be using Steamworks it's possible they might swap it over after they get Dark Souls 2 finished.

It's a good game, but kind of a mediocre piece of software. DSfix/DSCFix/DSMFix help with some of the annoyances, but you can't exactly mod out GFWL sadly.

  3.

I also have my doubts around if I can handle Dark Souls, I don't have patience with games that force repetition on you or don't allow reasonable save progress so if you get killed you don't have to go back too far. But I need to at least try the game before I'll comment properly :geek:

... there is no forced repetition and the game autosaves all the time so you can always quit anywhere and you will be able to continue from there. Everything else is the player's fault.

The most repetition you get is really having to run back to the boss fight rooms if you die during the fight. Quelaag was the worst for that because of running through the swamp, though the fight itself wasn't that bad.

I started two new dark souls character in as many days. Started a dex based fighter though I'm thinking of going dex/int and playing around with sorceries with him. Second character is caestus only. Not having a shield requires a completely different play style than I'm used to. I like sitting behind big shield and big armour in Dark Souls. Having parry be the only method of blocking attacks and relying on dodge rolling in light armour is going to be interesting. I think I'll be going after the ninja flip ring soon. I've gone through the parish and done everything except ring the bell.

My main hand caestus has been upgraded to +5 and it's doing some decent damage though the inability to stun anything, the short range and oddly long attack time are some pretty big drawbacks. The huge mass of hollows on the second floor of the church was a pain in the ass. Even more so when I accidentally dodge rolled off the ledge and agro'd the baldur knights too.

  4. I actually liked the Renegade multiplayer, so this news is pretty nice to hear...

Damn stealthed black hand troopers. It was always really easy to miss the distortion effect when you were running around shooting other people.

Augh! Hotwire escorted mammoth tanks. ;(

  5. Just in case anyone is wondering, the Steam Christmas sale starts on December 19th this year. Discount amounts will be the same across both sales. If something goes on a daily during this sale, it won't be any cheaper during the Christmas sale.

  6. I took down Gwyn last night so I've finally beaten my first game of Dark Souls. Final playtime on my file shows 68-ish hours I believe. I didn't managed to parry anything from Gwyn the few times I tried it so I gave up on that strategy. I ended up baiting him into trying to grab me and then hitting him with a two handed axe swing before retreating. Took a little bit to get through all his health, but it was a pretty safe method of taking him down.

Now that Dark Souls is down I can get back to A Link Between Worlds and actually get somewhere in that game. It's still another 4 months or so until Dark Souls 2. :D

  7. Oh, how did you know how to beat Seath, if you he didn't tell you? :o:lol:

Ok. NG+ is just 50% more difficult that NG, so maybe the 4 kings might give you trouble as well as the Oolacile area enemies . Everything else is pretty much as easy as it was. =]

You mean how you have to smash the big shiny thing inside the boss arena that practically screams "hit me!"?

Also I had someone else tell me about the fight. >_>

  8.

Don't her sister was a bitch, and he brother was a mayor ****. The other sister is cool but just kill them both for completion sake, also you should kill the fake princess and the wannabe princess (Gwyn and Gwynevere) it makes Anor Londo so much interesting.

Gwynevere and Gwyndolin are both already dead in my game. The sun has set.

Majek: I did actually explore the library completely! I just totally missed him in the little library room! His hat is very good camouflage. Just blends right in with all the piles of books on the floor. Also he's dead now. My intelligence stat is still at 9 so his spells aren't really of any use to me. I have his hat, but apparently I have to wait until he goes insane to kill him if I want to get the the rest of his stuff so NG+ it is.

My Estus is already at +5. I think that just leaves Anastacia at Firelink and Quelaan as the only two remaining, but I don't see any real reason to kill them when I can get the last +2 pretty early in NG+ without murdering people.

    Chester: Dead

    Gough: Alive

    Cieran: Gone

    Smiths: Alive

    Anor Londo Firekeeper: Dead

    Eingyi: Alive

    Alvina: Pissed off

    Solaire: Dead

    Patches: Dead

    Logan: Alive

Okay, looks like I've got a few people left to kill.

Please spare the Daughter of Chaos. In fact, head on back down into the Chasm of the Abyss and farm 80 humanity for the poor girl. Her story is just sooo tragic *sniff*.

But that would mean that I'd have to fight through all that lag again. :/

Also I think the only thing you get from her is a fire keeper soul and Eingyi doesn't actually drop anything so there isn't any reason to kill them.

  10.

Not sure when I last saw Sieg, but I rescued the daughter from the Duke's Archive and then talked to her at Firelink shrine. Not sure where they've wandered off to after that.

Is there any specific NPCs I should be looking to take care of for items?

I don't even have the ninja ring. I'm actually using both Havel's and the Ring of Favour. This black knight axe is heavy man! I don't care about the stats, but I like the look of the stone guardian armour set so I'm wearing that. It just doesn't look right carrying around this big ass axe while wearing light armour. If I really need the poise for something I can just swap out a piece or two of Havel's set.

Well the Jester in DLC as well as the giant Gough, Cierdan if you haven't given her Artorias soul, then all the smiths in Lordran, Anor Londo firekepeer, Quelaag's sisterm undead male merchant ( the only way to get an uchigatana, unless you join Forest covenant) ... join forest covenant, buy stuff from their trader, then kill him and his bodyguard. Kill Solaire if you haven't yet.  Patches should die too.  I think that's all. Killing Sieg is fine too but he's gone.  Also join Gravelord covenant to get the sword, maybe even bother to get/farm 10 eyes from "frogs" to get both spells too.

And you're unlucky then, Seath in NG+ is even more annoying.  Hmm, have you gone and killed logan after defeating Seath?

  11. Yes Kalameet has only one attack where you can attack his tail. I could have told you that, if you asked me Deraldin. :D

As for Sieg, when did you last meet him or his daughter? And if you really intend to fight Gwyn, you might as well go kill every NPC out there. :) So you will own almost every item in the game. :D Oh and may advice for the Gwyn ... parry and riposte him. You'll love it. :)

Ninja ring is for tryhards only. As is Havel's ring. :p Real badasses use only Ring of favor and Wolf ring. :p  And dress in Crimson or Sage robe, plus Hollow soldier waist cloth, Gauntlets and helmet of your choosing, Elite knight gauntlets are a good choice and Royal helm looks great with Sage robe. At 40 endurance you're even under 25% encumbrance and therefore almost flying around. In style.

As for Ash lake, how else are you going to upgrade the great Obsidian Greatsword, the weapon of choice for Vitality/ Sunlight blade builds. :D  Or how else will you ugprade the moonlight sword?

I don't have anywhere close to the amount of faith I'd need for sunlight blade (I have 12) and I missed out on getting the moonlight sword because Seath is a jackass who turns around faster than Kalameet does.

  12.

Congratz, Deraldin. I suppose next you're going to tell me you soloed Ornstein and Smough :D

Are you...not supposed to? I soloed everything in Dark Souls except the end game boss and the DLC content...and I didn't solo those because I kinda just got bored of the game after the fourth Lord Soul and quit. Although, admittedly, I do think that those guys were probably the hardest of the bosses that I did do. I also ended up killing Smough first, which you're apparently not supposed to do...

Nah, soloing everything is perfectly possible, just more difficult. I ended up summoning Solaire for the Smough and Ornstein fight myself. I probably could have taken them both if I had kept trying, but it was considerably easier when you have a summoned ally to take the heat off of you while you 1v1 the remaining boss in that encounter. Killing Smough first isn't advised because when Ornstein powers up in the second half of the fight he is considerably tougher than Smough is as he has a more diverse move set and is much faster. Smough telegraphs his attacks so much it's almost impossible not to dodge him.

I also used Solaire to help out with the Centipede Demon, but that was it. The others have all be solo jobs. And I have been down to Ash Lake. I mainly went down there to kill the Hydra and see if Seigmeyer was down there, but I think I messed up part of his quest chain somewhere along the way as I never ran into him during Izalith. Don't really feel like running through lava all over again just to find him.

  13. I've heard getting the tail is next to impossible without a summon given how quickly he reacquires you after every attack. That said in a strictly loot-oriented playthrough getting the tail is a success since the ring you get from beating him is actually purely detrimental.

I managed to get the tail on my own! I only found one person to summon when I played earlier today and every time I tried I'd get summon failed. When I came back later in the evening I didn't see any summon signs so I eventually gave up waiting and went for it myself. I took me 5-6 tries to get the pattern down and figure out when I can effectively attack and when to back off.

If you are fighting Kalameet solo and you want to get the tail, there is really only one attack of his that will give you enough time to run up and smack the tail before he recovers. If you stick close in front of him he has two different attacks where he will rise up on his hind legs. The first one is his curse attack where he pulls you into the air and hits you with the debuff. The second one involves him breathing fire back and forth in a small arc in front of him. You want to wait for the fire attack, quickly unlock him, run behind him and hit the tail. You'll only have time for one swing so make sure it counts as it can be awhile between viable attacks.

I was using a Crest Shield +5 and my trusty Black Knight Axe +5. The crest shield has enough stability to tank his attacks without him breaking your guard and it provides excellent protection against his breath weapon. I'd use a 2 handed attack against his tail and with 40str/22dex I did about 500 damage per swing. I only needed two chops to take off the tail. The rest of his health bar was a piece of cake, especially since he no longer had a tail attack. Just stick close to him and keep trying to circle him until he attacks and you should have enough time for at least 1, maybe 2 swings depending on your weapon.

Other than that, I went and took care of Priscilla and bought all the different armour sets that Dornhall of Zena was selling. Lost twice in a row to a dragon covenant dude who was throwing around some really strong combustion pyromancies. I almost had him the second time around. He couldn't have had more than 10HP left after we hit each other. His shot killed me though. Tossed another point into Vitality to bring me up to SL88 and I'm pretty sure it's final boss time unless I can think of something else that I missed out on.

  14.

I think I've got just about everything finished up that I need to complete for my first run of Dark Souls. Finally got around to heading back into the Depths to kill the Gaping Dragon, got the last few items I was missing in Blighttown, killed Dark Sun Gwyndolin and I think that's it. Other than collecting a bunch of souls to buy up the last of the armour sets I'm missing and/or upgrading some more items, I'm pretty sure I've beaten everything except the final boss now.

No wait! I still have to beat up Kalameet!

That guy definitely took some doing by my friend and I. Unfortunately my Pyromancies and Sorceries (my Faith was still sitting at 8, probably try and fix that in NG+) were a no sell, as was my Moonlight Greatsword. So I had to break out the Black Knight Halberd.

On the plus side, I think he's definitely do-able even if you're not specced out for survivability, and most of my deaths were a result of my being an idiot rather than anything inherently difficult.

The best piece of advice for that fight is get the Ninja-flip ring and Keep dodging left.

I've fought him 3 times so far. I probably would have beaten him already, but I've been trying to get his tail and it's really, really difficult when you are don't have a summon to split his attention with. My first death was to something dumb. My second death was to getting caught at the very edge of his overhead flame breath attack as I tried to run away because I didn't have enough stamina to block the attack. My third death was to a charge immediately after getting up from being knocked down before I could get my shield up. All of these were avoidable.

I don't have the ninja flip ring and my gear load only allows mid rolls, but mobility hasn't been a problem for them most part. Thankfully he can't overwhelm the stability on my +5 crest shield which does wonders against his magic flame attacks. My claymore has gone into storage temporarily while I use the black knight axe which has been very nice for me so far. A little slower, but nice range and swing arc. Also has a vertical attack so I can hit the tail. Just need to work on my timing.

  15. I think I've got just about everything finished up that I need to complete for my first run of Dark Souls. 16. Dark Souls

Warped out of Oolacile and dropped off the four lord souls with the lordvessel. Spent 30 minutes or so farming the black knights in the kiln to complete my collection of black knight weapons. Out of the 4 weapons I think I like the axe best. The sword is like a stronger version of my claymore, but with less useful R2 attacks because of the wind up time and the flourish after the strikes. The greatsword is too slow for my taste though I imagine it hits like a brick if I bother to upgrade it.

Took down Artorias on my second try. My first try ended in failure when I overextended myself in a combo and used up too much stamina to block the combo Artorias sent at me in retaliation. He busted through my guard. When I got up I dodge to his right instead of his left and he got me with his follow up attack. Second time through went much smoother. He's got some fun attack patterns. I might stick around and see if I can't get someone to summon me for his fight again.

Beyond that I worked my way down into the Chasm of the Abyss. I think I may have to "borrow" my brother's computer for this section of the game. Something in this area is making the game slow to a crawl. I still have to experiment a bit, but my research suggests it might be the humanity spirits that are causing it.

Also, I really like the look of the Stone Guardian armour. Rocking the full set right now. I think I might stick with this one.

  17. Inspired by Giant Bomb's Vinny Caravella's attempt to finally beat Dark Souls, I have decided to soldier on with that game as well with the aide of my friend, DSCfix, and a Black Knight Halberd which is allows me to hit like a truck. I last left off just having just gotten to Anor Londo. We've made a lot of progress since then, having gotten the Lordvessel and defeated Seath the Scaleless, in the process getting the Moonlight Greatsword, and of course, me being a big From fan, I couldn't *not* use a sword called "Moonlight."

    *PICTURES*

My pyromancer/sorceress character, Laure de Marais. However with only 16 vitality at level 85, I can't take nearly as much as I can give.

Nice! I'm still working on my own play through. I've been pacing myself at one lord soul per day and just picked up the last one from the Bed of Chaos today. Next on my list of activities is to go through the DLC and beat up Artorias, Manus and Kalameet. The stone guardians in the Royal Wood are actually pretty tough. My +15 Claymore only does about 150 damage with a two handed R1 and I can't stagger them so I can only get in one hit before I have to back off. I fell down a slightly hidden hole on the edge of a cliff earlier while trying to pick up some loot before I called it for the day.

My build has been pretty basic melee combat dude. 20 Vit/40 End/38 Str/22 Dex and nothing else of note. I have just enough faith to cast heal and just enough attunement to grab a second spell slot. Sitting at SL83 right now. I still haven't really figured out a preferred armour set. Right now I'm running with a combination of paladin, black iron and gold hemmed black. It's not the best for defences, but I like the look. I keep Havel's set on me for the occasional fight where I just need the ability to whack away at something without being staggered. Fully upgraded Black Iron is currently my best overall defensive set.

Also! I killed my first player black phantom today! Probably 90% of my time has been spent undead so I haven't had to fight any invaders, but I've been walking around alive more often lately. Got invaded just before the Demon Firesage by someone in full Havel with a greatsword of some kind. It was thicker than standard, but not as big as your Moonlight Greatsword. We traded a few blows while trying to circle each other before I gave up on that plan and just tanked his hits and nailed him with a couple two handed R1 strikes to take him down.

  18. Just had a great time in some BF4 with some coworkers over lunch :D

Battlefield 4 matches at work?! Lunch breaks?!

*gets ready to blame all the DA:I bugs on Alan*

Still slowly working my way through Dark Souls. Had a little bit of trouble last night when my controller decided that R1/R2 no longer wanted to work while I was going through the Tomb of the Giants leading to a couple deaths before I realized what was going on. Had to borrow my brother's controller instead. I took down the Four Kings and Nito and I think I'll go after Seath next.

Finally got enough titanite chunks to upgrade my claymore up to +15. Zweilhander is nice and all, but I like the versatility of the claymore with it's thrusting attack so I've stuck with that instead. Still haven't really settled on which armour I like best. I've most been mix and matching depending on the what I'm looking for specifically. Using a combo of Black Iron and Elite Knight for general purpose protection to keep me under 50% equip without Havel's ring. Toss on Havel's armour when I just want to wail on something and tank the hits with that massive poise.

  19. Not playing, purchased.

Found out two games wanted by my niece and nephew, so I had to spend 20 minutes trying to figure out a third game for Target's buy 2 get 1 offer. The free one would be for me, naturally, as buying games for them unprompted is unwise.

Ended up settling on Tales of Xillia. Of all the games Target has in store, it's the one I don't have with the best chance of entertaining me.

What part is unwise, the buying of gifts, or specifically the buying of games? If it's just the gifts, why not use them as Christmas gifts? It's only another month and a half to go.

I'm back on my Dark Souls kick. I killed over 250 silver knights this afternoon while farming souls in Anor Londo. I managed to get 2 silver knight straight swords, no silver knight spears ( ;()  and a crap load of silver knight shields to go with all those souls. Spent 220k on upgrading my pyromancy flame to Ascended +5 and the Firestorm spell. Farming the phalanx enemies in the Painted World courtyard is so much faster than going after the silver knights was. I'm still a few levels below where I would be able to summon/invade a friend so I think that will be my next task followed by upgrading some armour. Havel's set is by far the best armour I have right now, but damn is it heavy.

  20. Mark of the Ninja I got from the Steam thread here.

And... it's surprisingly good. Who would have tought I would actually like a game about stealth *this* much? I wouldn't...

Fantastic game. It's the only game on my steam list that I had completed all the achievements for. Or at least it was before they added the DLC achievements to it! >_<

I've been bouncing back and forth between Pokemon and Dark Souls. I kinda hit another brick wall in Dark Souls named Smough and Ornstein so I'm taking a bit of a break from that and training up some more Pokemon.

  21. Doesn't it say 88W idle from the first link, and 300 something under load. ATI are deliberately trying to obscure how bad it is, I'm sure they are aware it's a point of contention.

Keep in mind that the figures in those graphs are total power draw from the wall. They are measuring total system consumption, not just that of the graphics card. That said, Anand does mention that the GPU is drawing 5-10 watts more than it probably should be with the drivers that they were using to test.

EDIT: Bah, Samm beat me to it. That's what happens when I get distracted and end up reading the whole page. >_<
