Well, I did a blood test about six months ago which looked fine in every respect, but is there any chance that I just "lucked out" on e.g. blood sugar? Or is the fact that you have to do it on an empty stomach supposed to eliminate such potential misrepresentations of the blood values? Oh well, I guess I'm just making too much of everything right now.
a blood test is not the only, nor primary, method of determining diabetes. if a test comes back way high or way low, that is certainly cause to see a doctor, however. anyway, if you haven't eaten in a while, your sugar would be low (if you had diabetes) more than likely. and hour after eating a full meal, it would otherwise be high.

i'm curious, however... is there a performance hit if you turn it on? i would assume so, but you never really know.

Do you mean that they sold it to me with some of the features locked away so I couldn't use them? Is that even legal?
sure. you paid for exactly what you got, a 6600. that there are extra features is only gravy if you figure it out. the 6800 GT is easily upgraded to ultra status with rivatuner (minus DAC/memory speed), for example, by simply turning on the additional pipes.
in the world of semiconductors, it is quite common, btw. FPGAs are binned for speed (uh, Field Programmable Gate Arrays, the things the "firmware" goes into). AMD/Intel processors could be mucked with externally in the past to change their operating frequencies (there was a big stink about Intel locking the ability a while back). they were the same chips, just configured differently.
reliability is always an issue, however, because typically a chip is only tested to the level at which it is sold. that means, probably, that the transparency AA on a 6x Nvidia card was not tested (this makes it cheaper, too, since they don't have to go through the same level of quality control).

Also, I'm not sure about this but just because it's not hereditary, doesn't mean it's not genetic(?).
heriditary == genetic with the exception of learned behavior i suppose (i.e. i inherited my dad's bad temper sort of thing... yes, i did, btw
).

Can I develop diabetes without having anything hereditary in my genes to do so? I'm starting to get just a wee bit worried that I may have or may get diabetes even though no relative of mine has it. I'm a hypochondriac since only recently, so I suppose that's one of the main reasons why I worry. When I try to be rational I figure it's nothing, but you never know.
first, never self-diagnose. you're not trained to do that even if you have an MD (objectivity is severly lacking when you are considering your own health)!
second, even if you do manage to contract type-2, it takes a loooooong time to develop into something serious. as long as you get regular checkups from a doctor, he'll find it before any damage is done. if you're past your teens (or early 20s), type-1 is unlikely.
as for heriditary characteristics, type-1 requires the gene though a lack of family history is not proof you don't have the gene. if you do, a simple blood test will reveal the gene, which still only gives you a 5% chance of developing diabetes. the genetic link for type-2 is a bit fuzzier from everything i've read though it is likely from what i understand (again, a lack of history does not preclude the possibility). in either case, i do not know if the genes are recessive or dominant.

as long as you keep score, yes.

thinking about it, i'm pretty tied up in a lot of hobbies...
i shoot pool (8-ball and 9-ball) every wednesday. i'm a member of the APA (link to southern colorado APA). i'm handicapped as a 6 in 8-ball and a 7 in 9-ball. of course, this involves rather intense drinking which is probably why i'm not a 7 in 8-ball (the max) and an 8 or 9 in 9-ball (the max).
i go camping regularly. this weekend we're returning to 11-mile canyon. my son and i did a "boys weekend" there a couple weeks ago. beautiful is an understatement. this will be my 6th weekend out. we intend to scatter camp (find a place in the wild) a few weekends this year too.
i ski 20+ days every year. mostly at copper mountain and breckenridge.
i follow climate science, particularly the statistical methods used to reconstruct temperatures for the past few millenia. the most commonly used methd, btw, is called Principal Component Analysis, which is a less stringent variety of Independent Component Analysis which is probably what my PhD dissertation will cover.
yes, believe it or not, my PhD work as well as my job are sort of hobbies as i spend a LOT of time with both while home (i don't sleep much). of course, i'll be working from home in a few months so the distinction between "work" and "hobby" will be blurred even further.
computers. duh. not playing anything now, though i'm plotting my conversion to linux which will result in a development environment for my previous hobby.

another gig of RAM, a dual-core athlon (4800+, maybe 5000+) and a new hard drive (250 GB sata @ 3.0 Gb/s). the HD is on the way, and the cpu/memory will be over the next couple months.
oh, and linux (fedora core 5). i'm going to dual boot with winders on the current HD and linux on the newbie.

Lots of diabetics get amputations and can't see.
many that have these problems are semi-sort of "old school" in that they got diabetes before truly proper management existed. younger diabetics, those diagnosed probably in the last 20-30 years, are not nearly as likely to suffer such maladies due to better treatment. advances in insulin as well as a better understanding of the effects of diabetes on the system have aided in these improvements.
a good example is the insulin pump, which my wife is on. low/high blood sugar events are minimized as a result of a constant background (basal rate) level of insulin. for those not on the pump, they have long-acting insulin which stays in the blood stream in sort of a time-release fashion. neither of these were available 50 years ago.

I love the way all my fellow 6800 owners pimp out their card to the max like there's no tommorow. :D
technically, i'd also have to speed up the DACs and memory to have TRUE ultra performance. however, doing so is not good for the card's expected life and the difference is minimal. the primary boost in performance comes from the added pipes, which are easy to turn on and don't (shouldn't) really hurt anything.

Another forum. Just check the properties.
i remember we had it at missy's lair, but it's not in the "clickable smilies" list here and i'm too lazy to insert things unless they're automatic!
thanks, however.

The main issue here is: when does history become history and when does the victims right to claim the guilt card end? (and why do I feel like this thread might classify as "controversial" ? )
when those responsible are either dead or justice has dealt with AND, those that supported such behaviors are also no longer an influence.
the latter part is really subjective. for example, nobody alive today has legally held slaves in the US. however, it is easy to make the claim that black people were openly, legally, persecuted until the civil rights movements in the 50s/60s (yes, i know, discrimination continues, but that happens in all cultures and is unavoidable). so, there are probably a few that can still claim some sort of "guilt card" today (that are still alive), though many of the persecutors are either dead or have been punished.
personally, i don't buy the "discrimination" card as people discriminate in everything they do. they hire people they like, they live with people they like, they deal with and make friends with people they like, etc. to claim guilt based on this is, IMO, a cop-out.

Which contrary? Everyone that votes is not an idiot, or not everyone that votes is an idiot?
not everyone that votes is an idiot.
Either way, yeah, I know. It was a joke.i figured that much. otherwise, you'd have had to lump yourself in there one way or another. heck, you'd even have to lump hades in as an idiot and we all know what... oh, wait. nevermind. bad analogy.
(need the pokey emoticon)

someone that everyone can accept
actually, not even that. more often than not, it is someone that the plurality can accept. never is it someone everyone can accept and only rarely the majority.

One idiot's vote over another's? Would it really matter?
you presuppose that everyone that votes is an idiot. the contrary is probably true.

btw, one of the primary reasons more and more people are being diagnosed with type-2 is simply awareness. this happens with any "new disease" on the scene.

yeah, i doubt raising your temp to a bit over 100 (102 or 103 is probably the maximum "safe" temperature for adults) is sufficient to dissolve sugar crystals.

unfortunately, a lot of the people that don't vote, probably shouldn't. this type of incentive would bring out all the idiots. would anyone really want them deciding the fate of society?

No, it's not. The article said the money would be payed using unclaimed lottery money.
which would otherwise be used to subsidize taxpayer initiatives. in the end, it is taxpayers' money.

it's got nothing to do with society.

i'm guessing this will lose in some sort of constitutional battle. essentially, they're paying people to vote. i don't know for sure, however. maybe gromnir has a well-informed opinion.

uh, no. i have a GT and managed to turn on two extra pipes. the GT is the same core as the ultra, just less pipes (untested, and not always working when turned on, though mine are working).
i don't think the DAC speeds are the same, though it would not make any processor performance difference either way... just a crisper screen.
nope, GT to ultra.
