  1. It was AD&D, and I was 8 or 9(so 1988-89?). It was summer, and I was at our family's cottage. My older brother and his friends were all playing it, and I begged to play also. I remember the gnome illusionist kept saying I shouldn't be allowed to because I was under age -- they were all 12-13 and I think it said for ages 10+ on the cover of one of the books. Any way, they let me and I made an elven mage named Hocus...  I remember thinking I was quite clever haha. I don't remember much, except for that there were lizardmen and a swamp. Oh, and that Hocus drowned on the last day that we played.

We didn't own any of the books, so we didn't play again until the next summer. That was the summer of Robotech. The summer after? Teenage, Mutant Ninja Turtles. When I was 12 or so, I started asking for AD&D books and managed to amass a fairly large collection over the next 6-7 years before finally giving up on PnP as friends outgrew it, or moved away.

  2. New stuff from Paradox.

Looking forward to hearing more about Runemaster.

A person attending the announcement at PDXCon tweeted the following:

-Norse-themed RPG. 3 classes, 6 races. (Berserker, Skald, Runemaster)

-Races: Troll, Giant, Light Elf, Dark Elf, Human, Dwarf

-Some people will try to prevent Ragnorok, others will try to bring it forward

-Huge, procedurally generated map -- and 6 different worlds.

    -Turn-based combat

    -Emergent story-telling

-Actions lead to consequences that lead to different quest arcs

-"We want a single game to be long. 50-100 hours."

    -"Crusader Kings as an RPG"

-Re: multiplayer "Technically possible, but we're focusing on other design issues right now."

Also, apparently it will be playable later today at the Con, so probably more info then :)

  3. Unfortunately I'm generally still burnt out on spending before a product is made/finished ... but I wish them luck.

This is sort of where I'm at as well. A year ago I might have backed this despite it not being directly up my alley. But I've backed a lot of games in the last 2 years, most of which have not released. In order for me to back anything else, it has to be something I'm completely interested in, from someone with a proven track record. I just don't feel like donating my money for a game that is at least 2 years away, made by people I've never heard of, and with some basic gameplay I'm not totally sold on.

All that said, I have a feeling these guys won't have any trouble raising the $300k they've asked for. I know a lot of people who would trip over themselves to play a game like this :)

  4. I originally backed this, because I thought/hoped it would be some sort of spiritual successor to Ultima 7. When I realized it wasn't, I cancelled. I still don't know exactly what it is, to be honest... What I can gather is that it's an MMO(?) that can be played single player, with a focus on buying a house with real money and decorating it. You can also do generic RPG tasks like kill monsters and go into dungeons. Oh, and it has an overland map with "zones" instead of an open world.

Is there a story or a campaign to play through?

  5. I voted Original IP and Cyberpunk, with no preference to the combat style.

People have mentioned Cyberpunk 2070 and Shadowrun Returns as reasons not to do a Cyberpunk RPG, which is fair I suppose. Sadly though, I thought SRR was very shallow, short, and linear... Plus, while I know Shadowrun is cyberpunk, all of the fantasy stuff really makes it feel silly to me. I am definitely excited to see more about 2070, but I'm not one of the CDP faithful. I thought the first Witcher game was awful, and the second while quite good, still had tons of things I disliked.

I just think cyberpunk feels like something Obsidian could do well. But really, I would be happy with pretty much any setting... Other than "traditional" fantasy. :)

  6. I would have loved TSW as an episodic single player RPG.

    Episode 1: Kingsmouth. Episode 2: whatever (didn't get that far :p )

You could have a bit of choices carry over thing going a la Telltale.

Then again that is my same thought about Old Republic. If they had, instead of a MMO, turned it into episodic rpgs, each class story line its own little game and the whole franchise telling the story of that era, I probably would have bought every one of them.

That would've been perfect. I keep trying to play through the SWTOR stories, but the class-specific stuff is the only part I'm interested in. In my experience you have to do EVERYTHING if you want to stay anywhere close to the level you need to be... And after finishing as a Jedi Knight and a Bounty Hunter(and getting to 30 with two other classes), I just can't bring myself to go through all the tedious planet story stuff again.

On the positive side of TSW, the investigation type missions are great, the ones where they don't put a marker on your map but simply give you clues or riddles and you have to figure them out on your own.  More of that, please.

I think I only did 1(in the starting zone), but I loved piecing the clues together. It's weird how reliant on quest markers I've become over the years!

  7. The Secret World is one of those games I wanted to love desperately... But just couldn't. The combat was boring and horribly animated, the character models were off-puttingly bad, and the general questing became very tedious. The story/lore and investigations kept me playing, but the negative quickly overpowered the positive. I made it to the second map(I recall a demon-infested motel or something?), and I quit. There were just too many "kill x monster" quests for me. Plus, those stealth missions are awful!

If TSW had been a single-player RPG with better systems and art direction, I'd be all over it.

  8. I changed my vote to yes. My reason for voting no was initially driven by my desire to play the game sooner rather than later... But honestly? Even if it delayed the game by a month or two, it's not going to be the end of the world... And plus, more content(especially companions!) is a good thing. Not sure I'll be contributing more money though -- I'll have to wait and see.

  9. I loved the quirkiness aspect. But isn't this a bit late to be throwing requirements at the devs?

I don't think it's too late. Josh said the following on December 10:

While we do design our companions relatively early in development, we don't write them until we get closer to the end (e.g. I just started writing the first companion literally this morning). We ignore them completely as far as the crit path design of the game is concerned because they are all optional. Developing them later allows us to be much more reactive to the final designs of quests and areas.

  10. I got into the Hearthstone beta, so I played that for a few hours last night. I'm sure it is fun for people that like that sort of thing, but I don't have the inclination to devout myself to it.

I played through Broken Age Act 1 and loved it. It's a bit short(3-4 hours), and the puzzles are easy... but it made up for it in story, art, music, voice acting, and charm.

  11. A flavor of quirky more akin to Dandelion from TW2 or HK-47 from KotOR or Morte from P:T might be acceptable (quirky but not idiotic is what I'm thinking), or perhaps characters like Mission Vao from KotOR or Alistair from DA:O that have a strong sense of humor but aren't walking jokes, but I'm wary of 'comic relief' characters in general.

    I couldn't agree more.

I haven't played the BG games in over a decade, but Minsc is basically just a catch phrase in my mind now. I'm sure there is more to him than that(I do recall a few details), but "Go for the eyes Boo" overshadows everything else. I suppose HK-47 is dangerously close to falling into the same category, but I dunno... Minsc was just very silly, and one note.
