  1. I didn't think there was anything wrong with 2e either. Another update and streamlining might have been fine, but a complete overhaul? It's a totally different game now. But that's the nature of things. The past will crumble and we all still cling to it and mourn for a bygone era. You'll know what I'm talking about soon enough.
  2. Last Tango in Paris. Has anyone ever seen this? I've only seen it recently, and as I was feeling pretty miserable at the time, it struck a deep chord in me. I don't agree with Pauline Kael that Last Tango is "the most powerfully erotic movie ever made". Yes, there's lots of brutal kinky sex, but none of it is sexy. My idea of a sexy movie is something that might actually make you smile, like Sirens. This one is dark and depressing. In fact, it's the most raw and painful meditation on hurt and desperation I've ever seen. This is the best performance I've seen from Marlon Brando, and there can be no question that he carries this movie almost single-handedly. One of the truest and most moving lines I've ever heard in a movie comes from that scene where Brando is talking to the corpse of his wife, where she is interred. She committed suicide, and for reasons he doesn't understand. At first he just calls her vile names, but as his tirade continues, he sounds more and more hurt. He tries to peel away the makeup on her and ends up sobbing over her body instead. "Even if a husband lives 200 hundred ****ing years, he'll never discover his wife's true nature. I may be able to understand the secrets of the universe, but... I'll never understand the truth about you. Never." I guess you could say that at the end of any failed relationship. Anyone else have thoughts to share on this movie?
  3. I use the AD&D system, a combination of 1e and 2e rules, but with my own specific modifications. It still works fine for me, and always has. I do not consider 3e to be an update of an old game, but a different game entirely. The game I knew and loved is dead, but that doesn't mean I can't still enjoy it and play it with my own group as I see fit. The White Wolf system never really clicked with me well; it just seemed too simplistic for my tastes. GURPS had a lot of cool stuff in it, but was also painfully silly and inflexible in some areas. I like what I've seen of Palladium and Rifts, but I haven't played either. I'm also really fond of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. I'd like to play Role Master as well, if I ever got the chance. I'm a real detail freak.
