  1. And even the grimoire's have an investment too - you need to spend gold (and re-spend the gold when you respec), which punishes learning and experimentation.

I really dislike the idea that builds need to be permanent or expensive in some way to change.

These two statements are in stark contrast to what most players are experiencing. Gold is incredibly abundant before players are even at the midway point of the game. Sure you start off a bit broke, but I was swimming in Gold by the time I hit the catacombs in Defiance Bay. Saying that grimoire's and build changes are expensive is just false, to be honest. I mean, look at another discussion taking place on the same page of this forum:

    https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/81321-disappointed-with-20-respec/?p=1762936

For the purpose of clarity, there are at least two members of this forum who present the argument that respeci'ng is too easily accomplished in Pillars, without penalty. They are asking that the game change in some way that would limit the number of times a player can respec because doing so is, and I quote, "ridiculously underpriced."

We can also look at discussions about the Stronghold to further illustrate just how abundant money is in Pillars. Some folks have argued that the only reason the Stronghold exists is to give players something to do with "all that extra gold," while others argue that the Stronghold still doesn't do enough to use up the abundance of wealth players collect:

I don't see it as much of a money sink - since I have far too much money anyway - after the first couple of upgrades when money's more tight, it's not even a question of 'upgrade keep v. spend money on something else' - I just click.

My point is, if a player commits to this game with more than just an overly casual mindset, then the fun-factor drastically improves and the true elements/functions of the game begin to stand out - including the areas that could use improvement. However, if someone approaches the game as a minimalist, then clearly the things you will experience will not reflect even some of the more basic realities of the game.  Case in point, there are real problems with the money system but the problems are widely perceived as the exact opposite of what you described.

I think Fenixp gave sound advice when he suggested that you shelve Pillars for now. Wait until the Storymode update comes out, which is 100% geared towards a minimalist playthrough.

The only reason I like the respect mechanic in Pillars is because of the fact that experience points are gained from quests instead of combat. Due to this fact, it can take a very long time to try out new character build ideas if we rely on exp gaining alone; which would be an unfortunate burden, imo. Allowing players to respec easily instead of investing 30+ hours to test out a new build idea seems like a noteworthy compromise.

    My 2 cents

    Two words: hired adventurers.

But how will I know if say, My Paladin can impact 5 completely different other character classes? I would still be limited to a "baseline build" by not being able to respect my main. Stop trying to take away my freedoms, dont let the terrorists win!

  4. I can't get back out now and no older save games (my computer bogs down when there are too many saves).

Am I screwed?  If I am, this is the most ridiculous situation I have ever seen and is going to make me rage quit.  I just bought the White March too, hoping to play it with my fully leveled characters.

On top of not being able to get out of the pit without ending the game, I can't even access the DLC!!! that is absolutely the most stupid thing I have ever seen.  They should never let you delete that old save file if this is the case.

Well were you wearing the Official Obsidian issued Helicopter Propelled Anti-File Deletion Safety Helmet?? It comes special order (for free) if you Register your game with Obsidian and add additional comments of, "I am prone to deleting critical files." If you wear this cap while playing PoE, any time you're about to delete a Save Game file at a Critical Moment, an OBS Agent can remote-activate the propellers which will promptly lift you in flight away from your mouse n keyboard.

If you don't end up rage-quitting and instead use the Console commands provided by other more prestigious users, then I strongly recommend ordering your Safety Helmet today, while supplies last!

Pale Elves are supposed to be allowed facial hair, and that problem will be fixed in 3.00.

Good to know it is going to be fixed. Despite the good record Obsidian has set, I still feared the issue would be forgotten because of its lack of impact on the gameplay itself.

Iterative software deployments typically have a build list that is reviewed before a release; I doubt that Obsidian is making updates purely on undocumented memorization.

  6. I feel like the odd man out, considering that I love Chanters as-is. For context: I have always hated the Bard class in every damn game that implements it. The whole, "jack of all trades, master of none," concept annoys me to no end. To specialize is to excel, and if diversity is required then multi-classing is perfectly viable. But a Bard is neither a pure specialist nor a multi-class powerhouse; it's just something that sucks at everything so tries to do it all at once to compensate: quantity over quality with a heavy reliance on dumb luck.

So when I reviewed the Chanter class the first day I purchased PoE, I was like, "oh hell no, this is a Bard in Knights clothing, you aint fooling me." But then I read reviews and Chanter build threads (not just here, but on Steam and YouTube), and suddenly I realized that this was more than just a revamped Bard. As a second line damage dealer (Pikes) with constant Buff/Debuff combinations running in tangent, and the occassional spell (like Summoning a creature that can Stun enemies with each attack) opens up all sorts of amazing combat tactics.

Chanters feel like what a true Battle Mage is meant to be, and I can't really see much in the way of problems; although I am always happy with balanced improvements.

I don't know... maybe re-introduce specializations for singular weapons and restrict the grouped ones to martial classes? Create generic talents to reduce the disadvantages of weaing armor and have fighters get them for free, plus a high-end one that they're the only ones to get?

It's not like casters actually want weapon specializations that badly. And if one wants to be a melee battle mage he is most likely know what kind of weapon he wants to use.

Armor decreases action speed. Boo-hoo. Naked wizards galore. I've heard somewhere that more exposed skin increases the amount of magic power you can use. I guess it has come to this :w00t:

    lol @ naked wizards galore

I have always liked the Battle Mage type class (Elder Scrolls, Grimrock), and of course one of my PoE favorites is the Paladin, who wears full plate armor and casts spells just fine.

These last few posts were a fun read, and I found myself thinking about the different types of spell casting that can occur in a fantasy setting:

    1) Purely spoken spells (can be countered with a Silence spell)

    2) Hand-weaving spells (spell failure increases with heavy armor & weapons)

    3) Rune memorization spells (limited to once per day, requires tactical counter spells to block)

It would be interesting to see all 3 in a single RPG, as I do not think it has been done before. Typically, a game supports only 1 type of spell casting, or at most a combination of two; where the most common is the combination of Purely spoken spells for mages and Hand weaving for hybrids (they can wield a weapon but not a shield in order to cast with a free hand). If a game uses Rune memorization then that type of spell casting is typically the only type available.

Anyway, lots of good ideas coming out of a misguided thread lol

  8. When you criticize a game, you criticize it for what it is. If it is a part of a series, you compare it to the rest of the games in that particular series. You don't compare it with something else.

Finer words are rarely spoken on this forum. Meanwhile...

Personally I didn't find Poe's ruleset to be very attractive as a pen and paper gamer, far too 4th edition-ish and centred on combat, I would never use it in a tabletop game

As a direct retort, I refer to Sed's quote above. I will add that I too would not use PoE's ruleset in a tabletop game, mostly because I would never play a tabletop game.

  9. I think most would agree that it appears as though the OP has never actually played PoE, as noted by the fact that he repeatedly puts emphasis solely on "weapons" as the unique divider between each character class - as opposed to the real divider: talents/skills/unlocks.

This false premise is what gives rise to his conclusion that PoE should be classless if weapon restrictions are not enabled. One could challenge the OP to upload his saved game, or at the very least post pictures of his current character build - as I'm curious how he managed to consciously select a Talent and still make these posts, but I doubt he'd be able to do either since he pretty much admitted himself that he doesn't own the game:

God forbid saying anything wrong to their beloved game.

Did anyone else catch it? He said, "their beloved game," which clearly places ownership of PoE in the hands of everyone but himself. It makes sense to anyone following the discussion and witnessing his strict avoidance of typing anything remotely related to class Talents, let alone actual Character Builds. The only saving grace is the fun read from posters like PrimeJunta, evilcat, anameforobsidian, Fenixp, and why.

Oh, and AD&D <-- forgot to type that somewhere lol

  10.

In that aspect the games resembles to Dark Souls, basically the "classes" are just what gear & stuff you start with, later on you can be whatever you want to be, if PoE wants to be that fine, but it would be better for it to remove all classes and just give the player to chose the gear & abilities he wants to start with, why bother creating classes if they mean nothing.

Wut? Have you even played the game?

The OP seems to be taking the lowest common denominator, and then drawing a high-level assessment. That can be fun I suppose, lemme try...

Pillars of Eternity has a loading screen; in that aspect the game resembles Super Mario Bros.

Ya that was exciting! *squeals of joy*

  11. I'm sorry I didn't no that I had to speak slowly so you can understand.

He understands perfectly fine because he knows the difference between the words "tedious" and "difficult" whereas you seem to think that they are synonymous. I agree that you should speak slowly, but only because if you go slow enough you might catch your errors before hitting the reply button.

In this case, Boerer clearly said that the task was 'tedious' which means monotonous; and often implies simplicity in repetition. How you managed to confuse that with "difficult" is (ironically) quite tedious, in the 'slow or dull' aspect of its definition.

  12. The irony is that explaining class restrictions usually comes across as needless and/or non-sensical, but other restrictions, such as those based on sex, race, or region, can seem perfectly reasonable and explained with more felicity by use of lore. Why is it only elves can use the fabled fairy ring of yore? Because the Elf King made a pact with the fairy goddess, that's why! lol

Grimrock is an excellent franchise. I hope they come out with a third installment. Can't do the same thing with stats and weight in Pillars, though. Not only are the attributes a little off-kilter (and on purpose), but so is inventory. Of all of this, the inventory took some time for me to get used to it.

Well I think the acceptance of restrictions based on gender has more to do with being Politically Correct (girl power!) and races like Fairies likely fall in the same category since they are the trans-gender's of the fantasy RPG realm lol

I'm a huge fan of Grimrock, and if you're bored over the holidays check out the Mod I created for it, Mystrock.com

I re-created the entire world of Myst (realMyst by Cyan, inc) in to a dungeon crawler RPG, cause why the hell not :dancing:

If there is ever a Mod Kit for PoE I would love a chance to do something in this framework.
