Why did NCR ask the player/Courier to bring the package to the Divide?

NCR sacks Navarro in the West, recovers a bunch of tech they don't understand, as history has proven.

 

They do, however, recognize the symbols (American flag, silo stencils, etc.) and recognize it might be tied to the same symbols and markings the NCR found at the Divide.

 

NCR hires a Courier to take the item there. They don't for a second think that anything bad will happen as a result, and neither does the player.

 

Player delivers package, leaves.

 

The package is a detonator that contains missile launch codes that just needs to get within range and start chatting with launch computers.

 

So it does. As Ulysses says, package "wakes up," sends the detonation signal to missiles locked in silo, earthquakes and storms result. Post-apoc wasteland because even more post-apoc.

 

Fragments of package (along with everything else in Divide) scatter, are scavenged and rebuilt, package ends up in a new frame.

 

History repeats.

For the record, I thought this was an amazingly clever way to give the Courier a backstory without causing disconnect between him (her?) and the player. I kept wondering what the Courier could've possibly done to piss off Ulysses to such an extent, and if it was something completely out of the realm of possibility in terms of how I might have handled it. But he just delivered a package, and I can safely say that I probably would've done the exact same thing in my Courier's shoes. That's what made "Lonesome Road" such a fantastic way to go out, in my mind.

 

Wish someone could convince you to write a novel about Ulysses's travels through the Divide, Big MT, the Sierra Madre, setting up Wolfhorn Ranch, etc. Also, I wish you guys were making another Fallout game. Most of my wishes involve Obsidian + Fallout, actually!

 

Might as well just take this chance to pass along my praise for this game. The base adventure was great, but the DLC took everything up to a whole other level. If you guys ever do a GOTY edition, I'll very likely buy the whole thing over again - that's how much I loved it. Bethesda would do well to keep you guys heavily involved with the series going forward, if not at the forefront. In any case, can't wait to see what you and the gang have in the pipeline. RPGs that actually involve role-playing seem to be few and far between these days. Very glad your company's still keeping the faith. xD

Giantevilhead: To answer the Enclave question, that's unknown. In the 1st iteration of Van Buren, history was the Enclave nuked the hell out of San Francisco, assuming that the destruction of the oil rig was caused by attackers from that city (and also a way to clean the slate there).

 

Heartbreak_Courier: To continuing the franchise and work on it again, we'd love to if the opportunity presented itself - thanks for the kind words, we enjoyed being able to take another shot at the license (and dig up the old Van Buren material as well).
