After character creation I reached the point where I fight the pirates at the beginning and then do the “Choose your own adventure” text portion immediately afterward. After the text portion ends the game crashes. When loading my save it loads to just before the fight with the pirates and then crashes after the choose your own adventure portion all over again.

This issue was resolved by Validating my file integrity in Steam.  I guess it didn't download/install properly?

Had this happen to me after the new beta patch. Almost completed the game earlier without any crashes at all and now I can't make a new character since this happends all the time.
