When I loaded the app after the update, all of the cards opened in chests that I had are gone. All of my characters, progress, and gold remain, but all of the opened cards are gone.

Sorry to hear about the loss of cards, but it sounds like you may be on the wrong account. Do you happen to be an iOS user? Did you update to iOS 10.0.2? Please refer to this thread to see if you are on the correct account.
