Brooch of Shielding only reduces Combat damage

I tried to use a Brooch of Shielding to reduce Black Fang's Acid damage breath, but I wasn't allowed, even though it said to reduce all damage by 1.  I only saw discard and bury as choices.

I saw this myself today.  Combat with Enchantress and with the initial damage she does I was unable to recharge my Brooch of Shielding, only discard or bury.

I choose discard and it did end up in the discard pile.
