Win the roll, lose the battle?

This morning I was playing Brigandoom solo with Merisiel in the Woods location.  Base game, no add-ons or gold purchased (yet!)  

 

When fighting a Bandit henchman, she rolled an 11 against the Bandit's 8 yet took damage.

 

Later in the same game, she fought a shadow, rolled a 14 and took 3 damage.

 

I'm not seeing anything that would boost the difficulty, am I missing something?

Figured I was missing something - was using the throwing axe, which increases difficulty.  Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forums and thanks for joining us! What difficulty were you playing on? Did you have any wildcards in play? Did you use any weapons that Merisiel wasn't proficient with?

Great! Glad that was the case and not a bug, but not so great for losing the rolls
