Are pets supposed to give you an accuracy bonus?

The guide says they are purely cosmetic, but when I equip one, my accuracy on the stats screen increases by 5. It's pretty bugged though - sometimes it 'sticks' and I get +10 after changing to a different pet, and it goes away entirely if I load or even save the game, or start combat.
