Question about the Scouting ability.

Ok I am trying to figure out how the search function for the scouting ability works. I can't find anything telling me what increases it or not. It is obvious that there is something that affects it since I have stepped on traps while in stealth.

Ditto in this question. Logically, it would be perception, right? But I can't really find any information to confirm this.

As far as I know, it's based on the Mechanics skill. That goes for all hidden objects.
