i recently got the game kotor 2 and i installed it and everything, however once i create a character and press play my screen goes black and i get this error

First it would help to know what the specs of your computer are, since someone might be able to see what the problem is likely to be.

yeah nothing on the faq

my specs are nothing fantasic pent 4 512 ram 160 harddrive

What graphics card are you using? What version of direct X? What OS are you using? Thats what I meant by stats for your computer. Chances are the problem is related to your graphics card or its drivers, but without knowing what they are no one is going to be able to make an educated guess as to what the problem is.

Definitely sounds like a graphics card problem: can you run DirectX9.0c on your setup?

oh i think the problem is direct 9 i dont have it thanks for the help guys ill keep u posted it if works or not
