Game's Performance terrible - only in some areas?

I think this forum might be more tech-savy than the GameFAQ ones.

 

I have an AMD Sempron 2400 and a Radeon 9700 Pro, with 512 Ram. The problem I'm having is that the game runs at 20-30 FPS normally, but drips to 10 FPS or less in certain areas. I think smoke effects in particular seem to be causing the problem. I've disabled shadows and framebuffer effects already.

 

Is there any way to get rid of the smoke effects?

Open SWKotor2.ini found in the map where you installed Kotor2. There find [Graphics Options] and add the line Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1
