Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Is it a shooter, a CRPG, or a hybrid?  How does it compare to Oblivion?

It's a horror game, not that much survival though. There's no GUI, you have to check how many bullets you have by opening the barrel and peeking inside. It doesnt really compare to oblivion at all, more like system shock 2. The visual effects are really cool, if you see bodies or anything scary, the screen will start to wave and the control will go sluggish. Like in that gamecube game, only more subtle.

Haha, just wait for the hotel chase, there you'll recognize that it is certainly a survival horror game.... or the Soggoth chase.

Cthulhu is an interesting mix of action, investigation and survival horror, but gets almost destroyed by annoying and illogical puzzles and very unbalanced difficulty. The gameplay is generally slower, a'la Deus Ex, but certainly not comparable with Oblivion. I also like the fact that you have to beware of Jack's mental state, because if you're careless, he may kill himself.

If you're seeking for a mature, very depressing (non happy-end for sure!) action adventure and can endure the annoying puzzles, you certainly will find your joy in this gem.

How's the replayability? I've heard it's fairly linear..

How's the replayability?

I'm currently playing it a second time, but only because there's nothing else to play right now.

From a story perspective, there's no replayability.... but a few unforgettable moments plus the fact that I don't need to jump every 5 min to a walkthrough when I'm stuck now just lured me back. Enjoy it while it lasts! The game gets better, but also more stressful.

Is there a demo. It undoubtedly won't decide me, but I'm curious as to how the game looks and plays.

It's too bad about the demo, but I was just being selfish anyhow. If the company is out of business, then there's not going to be any support, I suppose.

Try setting a good example by PMing the mod rather than castagting him in the middle of your thread. Unfairly, I might add.

The final verdict in regards to CoC is simple. If I'm convinced they've captured the atmosphere of the Lovecraftian universe, then I'm onboard. I might wait for it to go bargain bin, though, since it's not like I'm supporting the developer at this point.

Well if being your friend or having a high post count (e.g. spamming a lot) gets you special priviledges, i guess i'll have to start brown nosing.

As i said it's very atmospheric, and the it has the whole lovecraftian feel to it. Also the voice acting while not superb is at least immersive with accents and all.

I'm a Lovecraft fiend so I'll certainly be picking it up when I get bored of Oblivion.  Shame the developer died, though like Eldar mentioned, I won't feel bad about not having bought it early if it is good .

I'm not so sure about the NA release, but here in Europe the game already got released for a bargain bin price (30

Having a high post count does not give you special priviledges. I can tell you that by experience. If it did I would be a moderator and we all would be screwed!
