December 23, 200520 yr we thought our snowflake answer were pretty kid friendly. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> And also the most accurate. When water freezes ( I don't think this applies to any other substance ) it forms crystals. These crystals require more space to form than liquid water so the sustance expands to accomodate it's new shape. This is why it floats. It now displaces more liquid than it weighs. This is also why it breaks pipes when it freezes. Be glad it works this way because otherwise lakes would freeze from the bottom up and would rarely ever thaw. ( Electromagnetics? ) For extra credit...what happens when you screw up the crystaline geometry of water by using heavily ammoniated water and adding dry iodine? ( Hint-Ammonium Triiodide ) Ruminations... When a man has no Future, the Present passes too quickly to be assimilated and only the static Past has value.
