Net Light and Dark Side Shift

What the hell does Net Light Side Shift and Net Dark Side Shift mean? And how are they different from the normal Light Side Points Gained and Dark Side Points Gained because I just got done talking to Atris for the first time in the game and I just got Dark Side Points Gained, Light Side Points Gained, and Net Dark Side Shift. And why in the hell doesn't Obsidian include this kind of information in the booklet?

It means that you gained both dark and light, but there were more dark, so the total (or net) shift was towards the darkside
