well this thread does not serve a specific purpose .. only to give any reader a little bonus info! I've just searched and learned why the different months and days are called what they are .. and thought I would share it!

if you know any related information (or if I made a mistake), or just some other funny little piece of info you think people should know .. post it!

 

alright here we go

 

January - after the Roman God Janus, God of doors and entrances..

 

February - after Februus Roman God of purification

 

March - after Roman God of War, Mars

 

April - The name is derived from the Latin aprilis, either from the Latin word aperire which means "to open", probably referring to growing plants in spring, or from the Etruscan name Apru for Aphrodite.

 

May - after Roman Godess Maia Maiestas (also called Fauna, Bona Dea (the 'Good Goddess') and Ops).

 

June - After Juno, the Roman Queen Godess .. equal to Hera of Greek mythology ..

 

July - was renamed after Julius Caesar; previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin..

 

August - was named in honor of Augustus Caesar. The month reputedly has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar's July. Augustus placed the month where it is because that's when Cleopatra died. Before Augustus renamed August, it was called Sextilis in Latin, since it was the sixth month in the Roman calendar which started in March.

 

September - from Latin Septem, meaning 7 .. it was the seventh month in the year after March.

 

October - from Octo 8 (read above reason)

 

November - from Novem 9 ^

 

December - from Decem 10 ^

 

 

Then the days of the week ..

 

 

Monday - From Mona the Saxon Moon Godess

 

Tuesday - from the Nordic god Tyr (in Old English, Tiw, Tew or Tiu)

 

Wednesday - The name comes from the Old English W

well they did make the calender .. then conquered the known world .. that has to leave some kind of legacy!

 

and only fair that conquering England left some for us ..
