How do you get guards to stop being hostile?

So i got caught stealing something and ran, but now a bunch of people in Edgewater want to kill me on sight? Is there anyway to fix this?

I saw a tool tip that said leaving an area for awhile will lets things cool off, no idea how you would do this if you messed up in Edgewater at the start of the game.  I am not to far in to things so maybe there is a hide away or another town.

Well at least it is some idea what I might be able to do... I shall attempt to explore around for some time, maybe sleep a few days in a bed or something
