When in combat, if for some reason the enemy turns tail and reaches the 600 meters range you get out of combat, and that is ok.  Problem is they go to full health automatically, and the Watcher ship stays with any damage suffered on the fight.  So unless you had a quick save before the fight you have to fight that ship handicap because of an error on the system.
