Does sex matter (male or female) for PC?

I am inclined to play a female character, as the portraits seems to fit more than male ones.  So I am wondering, does it matter if I create a female over a male character? Does it changes anything romances or otherwise in game? Are there any romances? I know there are some hits with Maia; but without much spoilers, does it really mater the sex chosen upon character creation?
