I'm new to the game but it seems like this may be a problem, shouldn't I still be able to get focus from them?
Please correct me if I am wrong.

That is intended. You can only get focus from hostiles.

Configure browser push notifications

  2. Tap Permissions → Notifications.
  3. Adjust your preference.
Chrome (Desktop)
  1. Click the padlock icon in the address bar.
  2. Select Site settings.
