After downloading deadfire on my macbook and syncing the save games from steam cloud (I had previously played on a win7 pc), I noticed that only newgame was available.
After checking the appropriate directory, I noticed that all of my save files were in the Saved Games folder's parent directory, rather than in the folder itself. Moving the save files manually fixed the issue and the game ran properly. On the next sync, steam once again placed copies of the save files in the parent directory (Library -> App Support -> poe ii) rather than the Saved Games folder.
