Solutions

  1. Baldie's post in Sound playing on start-up, but no picture was marked as the answer   
    Apparantly there's some issues with the game and newer graphics drivers for certain cards, so I downloaded an old driver and everything worked out. yay!
     
    (I found out I had the exact same problem with another game, Bounty Train, which a friend had also run into, so he suggested that I try the older driver trick)
