To be fair, the disengagement thing is very unintuitive and will have plenty of new players completely baffled as to what is going on.

    Again

    1. These people got early copies

    2. They have had these copies for days

    3. These are "professional" streamers/reviewers

    4. They tend to be fans of the IE games and should be familar with basic mechanics and the ability to adapt to new ones

    5. They are showing off how to play the game

I hold them to a much higher standard than some new guy who is playing his first 5 minutes.

Also, I find engagement to be very intuitive. When Josh announced it I thought it made perfect sense. This mechanic also exists in other games.

Points 3 and 4 are false to some degree. I saw streamers who played so badly that I don't even think they know

what IE games are and secondly I refer to what I said earlier, streamers with about 30 followers.

Some of those streamers are also too young to have played the IE games aren't they?  (Unless they played them in recent years).

I can't speak for the streamers but plenty of people have played the IE games since their release. I was 6 when Baldur's gate came out so I didn't play it until much later. Same with the other IE games as well.

I think making sure no one can dump stats too hard is a good idea. I'm playing through IWD2 at the moment and it is a little silly that everyone but my bard is a sub-human monster with such low charisma that i'm not sure they can communicate in anything other than grunts while my wizard is the only one who doesn't have the mental capacity of a rabbit.

Silly indeed! But it's your choice, right? I wouldn't want to keep other people from playing around with the game. Not that I'm too bothered either way, I like keeping stats to human levels.

Well, hopefully the way the attributes are designed in PoE means that the desire to min-max is relatively low since the characters will be viable whatever whereas my monk in IWD2 kind of needed to be clinically stupid and utterly unlikeable so that I could ramp up his other stats and keep him useful.

  3. The more I think about it...

    I would be a Barbarian

    Party would be...

    Priest - heals

    Wizard - spells

    Ranger - tank pet+range

    Paladin - frontline+buffs

    Druid - misc

I can see myself using the AH in my first playthrough if there is no druid companion. In fact, alot also depends on WHEN a companion becomes available. I can see myself using the AH to get a class in my party sooner rather than later.

I read somewhere that all companions will be unlocked by the end of the first act, so you should have access to them all fairly soon.

  4. Actually I'm curious how many people are planning to use custom-designed companions on their first playthrough?

Personally, I can't see myself using any of them until a few playthroughs with the written companions since while I am interested in combat, my primary interest is seeing all the writing and character interaction.

  5. Sure PCs should be special, but why does it have to be an inborn characteristic and not something achieved? Think about a lot of the really accomplished people from history, were they really imbued with something supernatural, or were they just a lot more ambitious, maniacally focused and luckier than their fellows?

Chosen one story lines are so played out. Maybe it worked for the Nameless One in PS:T, but I'm hoping for something different.

I wouldn't really call the Nameless One a 'chosen one' since to me, that implies a prophecy or a least a destiny to be the only one who can fight some great evil. In PS:T, the Nameless One is special not because of anything inborn or the hand or fate upon him but because he made a massive mistake in the past that he spends the whole game trying to fix.

In PE, 'The player witnesses an extraordinary and horrific supernatural event that thrusts them into a unique and difficult circumstance', which makes it sound like the player does get to have something special about them but it's just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think that's a good compromise between being the chosen one, which is played out, while still having something special about the PC that explains why they are pursuing the main story and generally remain in charge.

  6. It's pure speculation, but I'm thinking the player will by default be an animancer prodigy on the virtue of being a Watcher. Souls have been noted to play a major part in the game, so the player discovering a talent for perceiving and perhaps later manipulating them would make for a natural thread around which to weave the story.

I kind of got the impression that animancy was more of a scholarly pursuit, so while I could see being a watcher helping you, I'm not sure it would make you a prodigy. It's like if you had the ability to see the movement of particles with your eyes, it would probably help you be a good physicist but you would still need to study for years and learn how to use some of the equipment.

I have admit that while I like the system, I'm not sure how you are supposed to get a Deceptive reputation since surely the whole point is no one knows you are being deceptive. Unless most of your lies are the sort that will get discovered later and lead to people talking about what a lying scumbag you are once you've blown town.

I suppose one could garner such a reputation by being a social chameleon, say three npc's are talking of our famed protagonist, one claims that he was a fierce and passionate individual, the other says that he was calm and logical, while yet another states that the man was creative and lost in his own world. Perhaps if we game the system, do our research and successfully read characters personalities, and alter our approach to suit that, then we will appear to be deceptive? All things to all men, though not necessarily in a negative manner.

I admit that my calm and professional Michael Thornton in AP did exactly this, he appeared to be everybodies friend, at least until he grew tired of their talking ala Mina.

    Edit: And Mina's sister Pootie.

In one of my playthroughs, I did the opposite and had Mike alter his personality to constantly anger whoever it was he was speaking to at the time. I think by the end of the game every NPC had a negative opinion of me. There's something really enjoyable about being a huge jerk.

You'll be pleased to know that Josh has said that this is exactly what they intend to do. Apparently different characters are even going to have different reactions to the same dominant disposition. See here for more: http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Disposition

This could be great as long it is not like in other games when suddenly everyone knows what you did. Even when you come into a whole new town in which no one heard of you  before

Well like they sort of said.... it isn't that they "know what you did".  It is that your character is known to have a certain kind of attitude, or projects themselves a certain way.  When you meet a stranger you don't know their life story but depending on how they act you are more likely to respond in different ways right?  That is what they are trying to simulate.  These scores are essentially an extrapolation of how your character is "perceived" to behave in general.

  9. Did every one miss Poke around the pool with a stick?

There could be something in the pool that could yank you off the wall.

    :)

Personally, I hope every event gives you the option to poke something with a stick

Tense negotioations with an Elven war party? Poke their leader with a stick.

Baking a pie for an important guest? Poke the ingredients with a stick.

Find a stick abandoned on the ground? Poke it with a stick.
