I don't understand why combat wouldn't provide XP. Getting a nice XP boost after toppling a mighty foe (and gathering up their treasure) is always rewarding. I really hope that Obsidian reconsiders this alarming decision.

This would be a great addition to the game! Even if it's just for those rare "named" items.

Aye!
Runesmith of the Obsidian Order, reporting for duty! The pledge has been made, m'lords.

I haven't gone through all 18 pages of this thread, but I do like the more realistic direction being taken (or at least implied by the majority of the posters here).
Growing up in New York City, I was lucky enough to enjoy the Metropolitan Museum of Art's fantastic arms and armor exhibit regularly. One particular coat of armor stood out as being truly princely looking. Such armor could make for a fantastic, high-end set (it is my understanding that this armor was used in jousting tournaments):
Armor of George Clifford, Third Earl of Cumberland, ca. 1580–85
Made in the Royal Workshops
English (Greenwich)
Steel, etched, blued, and gilded
H. 69 1/2 in. (176.5 cm), Wt. 60 lb. (27.2 kg)
Munsey Fund, 1932 (32.130.6)Collection Areas: Arms and Armor

Take the fraction of the community that is good at voice acting. Now, remove all the ones that don't have an appropriate audio setup. Congratulations, you have a group so small that it is not worth the headache it would cause Obsidian.
This. A thousand times this.
Agreed with this, many times over.

I hope, I allocate my money for the right purpose.
But I think, the gold backers are the students of the nineties - now in jobs with good earnings and with nice memories of old days of computer gaming and adequate pocket money to recall this memories.
You are likely right on the -money- with this one. Unfortunately, I was a child of the nineties and have only just recently begun raking in the pocket money. But, I do have fond memories of Baldur's Gate (simpler times!).
Although I was unable to back at the gold level, I am very pleased to see that so many people have done so. As Garrick says, "Life is glorious."

As for the comments about the cave being too shiny - I can certainly appreciate that concern. My hope is that the glow and brightness in that area is due to the crystals. Maybe they have some sort of magical glow to them, brightening the cave? It looks like they've got the dark/gloom side of things handled capably, based on the night time image of the town. This leads me to believe that the cave is intentionally bright.

Yeesh, those screenshots look terrific. They really look like they could be an HD remake of Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. The team seems to be nailing that Infinity Engine look and feel.

Wow! I am ready for this to be released now.

Mechanics, features, and well-known lore and history, sure. But, I would prefer that they kept anything intrinsically plot related quiet. Spoiling story elements in an RPG really can sap out some of the fun.

Thanks for this update. I had almost forgotten about some of the original classes and races. I am really looking forward to seeing what the Chanter and Cipher are all about.

From what I deduce, it seems PE is going to pay most tribute to Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale.
A sequel however (PE2), could perhaps introduce more industrialism into its setting, and not only continue the story from the original, but also evolve the world story (and pay tribute to Arcanum). In doing so, the list of games in current development (the current top-down/isometric cRPG) could look something like this:
Links are to the Kickstarter projects, many of them are finished and all of them have reached their funding goals.
High-Fantasy (& possibly Steampunk-ish?):
- Project: Eternity = Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale & Darklands Tribute (0 Seconds to Go)
(- Project: Eternity 2 = Tribute to Arcanum whilst keeping the above)*
- Divinity: Original Sin = Divine & Beyond Divinity Tribute (16 Days to Go)
- Shroud of the Avatar = Ultima** (0 Seconds to Go)
Science & Spiritual & Metaphysical:
- Tides of Numenera = Planescape: Torment Tribute (0 Seconds to Go)
Futuristic:
- Shadowrun Returns = Shadowrun (SNES) Tribute & Sequel (0 Seconds to Go)
- Wasteland 2 = Wasteland Tribute & Sequel (& old-school Fallout Tribute***?) (0 Seconds to Go)
* Just a "wish" & vision & possibility
Like swatting 3 flies with 1 hit:
1. PE sequel
2. Arcanum tribute
3. progression of the Eternity world
** Does not look like it's going to be top-down (more like 3rd Person) but I felt like including it into the list~
*** Honestly, I haven't followed the development progress of Wasteland 2 but what I can say is that I hope Fallout 4 (or the next one in the Fallout franchise) has options to move the camera into a top-down perspective with a Free Camera mode and a point+click system. A hybrid system, hopefully, something that allows both First Person and Top-Down (Something I feel that both New Vegas and Fallout 3 would have done nothing but benefit from doing). Dragon Age: Origins benefitted a ton by allowing you to have the "over the shoulder" perspective and allowing the player to zoom out (PC version).
^That paragraph has nothing to do with what I wanted to say: Wasteland 2 doesn't strike me as a Fallout-esque game from what I've seen on the pictures and the little I've read. It really looks like its own IP and that it has nothing to do with Fallout except that both are post-apocalyptic settings. That is intended as a compliment btw, Wasteland 2 looks awesome on its own. In my opinion: Wasteland is Wasteland. Fallout is Fallout.
TL;DR: Ramblings. The point I wished to convey is that PE2 could introduce more steampunk & industrial elements based on time progression between PE1 and PE2.
PE1 = Represents late 1500's (High or Late Middle Ages (Eternity Wikia); Technology in P:E)
PE2 = Could represent the more Arcanum represented Era: 1760-1850's (Industrial Revolution (Wikipedia))
Thanks for this post! I had no idea a new Divinity game was in development. That is great news. I really enjoyed the original games. Shroud of Avatar looks interesting too, as I missed the Ultima boat entirely.

Simple, effective, makes sense...Since the problem is identifying unique party members in bulky armor, why not have the ones in bulky armor be identified the way soldiers were historically? Painted armor, insignia on their backplate and breastplate, tabards, battle-flags, distinctive helms, etc.
I like it. There could be a system where, depending on what armor they're wearing, you could choose to, say, add custom-designed (think the emblem designing in Halo and the like; You can choose a symbol, background, and various colors) insignia to their armor, have them wear custom-colored tabards (possibly with aforementioned insignia on them), paint their armor...
The question is, should this be a free process you can do on the fly, or will you need to go to specialty armor decoration shops to add stuff like this? The first is more convenient, but the second is more immersive and realistic.
I think this is a very good idea. But, as I recall, the IE games didn't focus much on the character avatars in game -- the paper doll was more detailed and the portrait even more so. I liked having some ability to customize my characters (the two color options) and would like this to be expanded a bit. But, overall, this wouldn't be a sticking point for me.

Project Eternity is catchy. I say they stick with that.

My main gripe with the IWD2 UI is that the character portraits appear so small. In the IE games, the portraits really gave life to some of the characters and the art was fantastic. I didn't like how small they were in IWD2. The UI you referenced on the BG:EE forum is fantastic. Daylight (the poster there) put together some great concepts actually.

I backed PE at a fairly high tier -- $8 for the Order on top. Are you still giving out the custom titles for backers?

I like the idea of having an animal companion, even if its not one that has much backstory or ability in combat. In Syrim, I really enjoyed having a stray dog tag along with me. It was fun and seemed pretty realistic. If the animal is going to be effective in combat, it should probably be a bit tougher than a dog -- a wolf, maybe, or a mephit. Something reasonably intelligent, too.
Should corpses stay?

I think corpses should stay, at least until you have left the area.
