  1. Nothing about long save/load. A pity, can't play like that.

Umm, it takes me 20 seconds tops to go from clicking the icon on my desktop to moving my characters around. About 2 seconds to save using the 4 button on my mouse for "Save", part of that is selecting which slot I want to save it in requiring me to click several buttons and make a decision during this process. Which means perhaps it's your computer and not the game itself.

  2.

Well, I won't repeat myself about how bugs and game development work.

Patch fixing all known major problems & lots more expected tomorrow: https://forums.obsidian.net/blog/7/entry-179-patch-notes-103/

"virtually every player is likely to encounter in the normal course of completing the game."

Clearly and objectively untrue, as the many many posters on this very forum will tell you.

Let me clarify: virtually every player could reasonably be expected to potentially encounter the events which trigger these bugs.

Double-clicking an item, equipping a particular item, or loading a saved game are not unusual fringe events in a computer game.

Developers shipping a game with major bugs and then working furiously to patch them shouldn't be the default expectation.

No, it shouldn't be the default expectation. The only way that stops happening, is if everyone stops buying games completely until that changes though really. There's such a demand, that they can get away with it, all companies can.

  3. Comparing the old nintendo games from the 80's, which were on average about 250 kb's in size to a 14 gb game is ludicrous. All nintendo games combined for the original system would be a drop of rain hitting a lake compared to the data involved in Pillars of Eternity. Not to mention, a simplistic single system using the same parts and configuration to work off of. In comparison to needing to make this game work for all computers out there, regardless of parts used or operating system and the software the hardware comes with. Silly nonsense.

That being said, it is buggy. Yet, a massive patch within a week of release is great to see.

  4. I haven't gotten far at all, I have rebuilt a few times just testing out the various classes. Ugh for the time it takes to get through that intro/tutorial and actually get into Gilded Vale again if you restart. However, the monks I've made have been Might>Dex>Con focused DPS characters. Anything heavily armored, yes, I have issues with due to no armor penetration, but just going with Two Weapon Fighting and Turning wheel I am working them over pretty well.

With a backup option to swap to a set of Slashing weapons in case something is highly resistant to Bludgeoning, he put simply, kicks ass. Then again, I haven't gotten very far like I said. It could be I run into issues and that is something I just haven't gotten far enough with the game yet to find out. He's not my tank, but does a good job of it with twin Hatchets if things get hairy for him. Swapping to those if I keep getting hit will keep him in the fight until I can heal him and then swap back to unarmed.

  5. Chanters are a sustain buffer class. Who have an invocation mechanic to help them out for when fights go long enough. They work just fine. If you are using a group that just is high DPS and stomping the enemy in 3 rounds, then you don't run a chanter in the group. It's counter intuitive. Not every group works this way though. For groups that are taking longer to kill things, especially higher difficulties, the endurance regen, damage reduction and ranged attack speed buffs can be hugely beneficial if fights lasts 30 seconds instead of 12.

  6.

    Step 1: Kill the premade.

    Step 2: Loot Body.

    Step 3: Inventory check.

Step 4: Sell anything not useful.

    Step 5: Hire useful companion.

    Step 6: Profit?

Step 7: Lose all NPC specific interactions (for some, like me, that is a very important part of the game).

Well pretty sure if you can't already, you'll eventually be able to mod all premade companions to have the perfect Min/max stats.

Again, a lot of people don't seem to read what most who don't like the pre-made NPCs are saying. We're not asking for min/max NPCs, we just want decent NPCs, let's take Aloth for a specific example, I don't want 18 Might, 18 Dex, 18 Int with dump stats like 3 Con but, let me just swap the 16 Per and 12 Might and I'll be happy.

Right. I can optimize these classes and races, sure. Just because I can doesn't mean I am. I simply want characters that are efficient at what they are meant to do and actually are effective in a combat heavy game. You can tout "Roleplaying!" all you want, but this isn't Myst, where you run around without getting into combat solving puzzles. You try moving around outside of a city, and you get pounced on by wolves, bears, bandits, shadows, etc. You need to be able to defend yourselves.

The way these companions are setup and built just doesn't make sense within this system. The way they are built basically forces you to make a damage based PC which can carry them on anything beyond Easy or Normal difficulty. As they aren't made to deal damage, or heal, or hit things fast, or mitigate damage for you. >.< Putting the weight of doing all of that on your PC, while attempting to keep the companions alive. A simple shuffling of which attribute points go where, and selecting different talents goes a very long way in their ability to survive, contribute, and be effective.

Can I use these characters and succeed in the game on Normal? Yeah, I can make a PC that carries them. That's not the point though. If they were just normal people off the street, they should be at home baking bread or making shoes. Not fighting shadows in a dungeon. They should be able to pull their own weight in a fight and help me out if they offer to join me on my quest. They aren't bakers and cobblers. They are priests and fighters and rangers.

Not everyone jumping into playing this game has experience playing RPG's, or previous games like IWD/BG/Planescape. Also, put simply, not everyone has the time to just reload fight after fight hoping for your companions to survive bad engagements. Having simple, efficient and effective companions who's attribute and talent choices are actually in sync with their class role would help these folks out. There is a marked difference in swapping Sagani's Perception for her Might in how effective she is. Changing Kana's chants to something else goes a long way. Aloth swapping his Resolve to his Might goes a long way as well. These are simplistic things that just flat out, make sense.

Why do all of these people have incredible Resolve and Perception across the board? When Might or Dexterity make more sense for the class they are? Why does Kana start with a move speed chant, when it makes more sense to have one that reduces damage from slashing and piercing weapons instead at level 1? Simply put, -10% damage from swords and arrows is far, far more useful in keeping your party alive in the early levels paired with armor.

Why does Durance have a crazy Resolve? Resolve doesn't let him cast his spells any better, as opposed to Wisdom in DnD, which was the basis for priests to cast their spells. Might and Intelligence are the things you base his spells off of. If we are going to base his stats off of DnD Resolve=Wisdom for RP purposes, then at least make Resolve be beneficial to casters. It's not though. That was switched to Might and Intellect in this game system. So, distributing his points to Might and Intellect as opposed to a high Resolve just makes sense. It thematically fits any magic user in allowing them to do their job. That's the long and short of it. Mechanical, and RP aspect. If you are a priest, or a wizard, in this game system, its imperative you have a good Might and Intellect. However, the Priest and Wizard in this game prioritized Perception and Resolve. That's a failure on the part of the developers.

Claiming that everything is fine because you can cope doesn't change the fact these characters, while having interesting dialogue and stories are just built poorly using this system. Poor builds are a detriment to the enjoyment of the game. As it doesn't allow the majority of your party to do their job. Putting pressure on you to micro manage more and more as the game progresses to compensate for their inadequacies. If they were at least adequately capable in their class abilities, not char-op broken, just adequately capable. I wouldn't need to make a stink regarding this. However, they aren't.

  7.

I have at least 3 mechanics and stealth and athletics on everyone but the person I dumped 7 lore on. One with 5 Mechanics. Level 4 party atm. We can sneak as a group, find and break into nearly anything we need to, and if need be, I have a character that can use high level scrolls.

You don't need mechanics on everyone, just on one character.

Only if you keep that one person in front at all times. Having a moderate amount on everyone helps me sweep rooms in a spread formation quickly. I spread out my formation and the whole room lights up without me needing to scout slowly in a circle all through it.

  8.

In the order I've picked them up:

    1. Eder.

Eder is pretty mediocre but nothing particularly ruinous either. His first talent is one of the worst picks possible though, and he doesn't seem built well for durability or damage. He's very "meh".

    2. Aloth.

Aloth's attributes are pretty really bad. He has 9pts spent in deflection attributes above the base, that he gets almost nothing out of while his might is very low. His spell selection is also awful. There's no Slicken. There's no Eldritch Aim. He has a useless touch spell and deflection boosting spell.

    3. Durance.

Durance has very excessive resolve but whatever at least it's a bit more useful than Aloth's 16 perception since. Talent selection though... bear's fortitude? Ugh. There are plenty of no-particular direction priest talents that are way better. Interdiction is what I'd have put on him. Bear's Fort is like throwing that first talent away, and Priest is a class that's already talent starved due to so many Interdiction/Holy Radiance talents you want.

    4. Kana Rua.

Poor chant and invocation choices, otherwise a decent build. He's workable.

Also Aloth or Kana really should have had mechanics boosted. I don't know why it got put it on Durance. He starts with 3 which is somewhat acceptable for early areas but a bit of waste to put it on a class with no bonus.

I really can't wait for a mod that lets us build them from scratch. I don't want to go without the banter and extra dialogue and so on but their builds are driving me a little nuts right now. I was hoping the early-game companions would be a little more practically built.

Hopefully the other companions are in better shape.

If you could respec them now, how would you allocate the points and skills/abilties? I'm having trouble with them both but I'm pretty new at this kind of game. I might try and build a tank from scratch to see if I can at least get going.

No point. I killed them and took their stuff. Sold what wasn't good, and used it to buy real companions.

Usually my rule in IE was to rest once per level at most

My rule in IE was basically "never rest anywhere hostile EVER". I'd also never backtrack to rest if it didn't make sense roleplay wise. This made spell use really strategic and fun. I had to carry proper healing rations so I could actually use my priest spells too. Sometimes if things went bad I'd backtrack and rationalize backtracking and resting but that was rare.

Playing PoE feels like I'm cheating the entire time. It feels like the game is forcing me to cheat because of these health bars.

Because, honestly, talent picks stop being valuable, because there are so few worthwhile talents. I've hit level 8, and I have nothing worthwhile to pick up for several of my character builds anymore. Its going to have to be something indifferent or something quirky but amusing, because 90% of talents are utter trash, and the remainder only work on specific builds.

That surprises me. At a minimum every char needs weapon training + weapon style. Then you usually want a couple class talents. Even the general (+will/reflex/fort) defensive talents are nice too.

You are quoting me as saying something I didn't say, you did. If you look back at what I *did* say, instead of quoting yourself. You'll see I say to just ignore what you did in previous games and just play this one. Expecting this game to work like other games is silly. It's a new RPG system, new game, it's not DnD, so doesn't play like BG or IWD or Planescape.

  10. I'm curious of your party makeup and stats. If you are dumping defensive stats and not wearing armor and shields, then yeah. You'll get chewed. If you have average Con and aren't dumping it, with high con/Resolve on your tanky front line it should protect you. Giving you a large endurance pool per encounter, and large health pool to run through multiple encounters per fight. The DR from heavy armor, and the deflection from a good shield will allow you to ignore a lot of the damage coming your way. Good tactical decision making will go a long way to limit damage per fight.

All damage taken per fight goes towards overall health. So if you can limit that, you should be able to cruise through multiple fights each day. Sometimes you'll get your ass handed to you and take a ton of damage unexpectedly. However, I am thinking either you are being too aggressive and not using good tactics, or your party makeup just isn't setup to do what you want to do.

In order to run a party that doesn't need rest often, you need to build for it. Paladin for Lay on Hands self healing tank combo with a Fighter to be main tank. Chanter to grant DR and healing in an aura with them. Cypher for DPS and CC behind them that has encounter based powers instead of daily slots. Rogue or Ranger DPS ranged striker to pew pew the enemy behind the tanks. Things like this.

Besides all of the above, I think your preconceptions regarding what you expect due to past experiences is hurting you. What came before doesn't mean it will be the same again later. Let go of what was before, and just play the game to how its working within this game. Ignore the other previous games which used different systems.

  11. A chanter with crazy intelligence and good tactical use of positioning can pump out a chant aura to the whole team. Just requires you not use the chanter on the front line, and in the middle of the party. Choosing this chant means you are using 1/2 of your core kit on just ranged attacks. Nothing crazy. If so, it requires you go Ranged heavy to make use of it. Completely utilizing 1/2 of the chants you can have active, and at least half your party on ranged attacks.

  12. This just makes me shake my head. I'm engaged to a bisexual woman, have a lesbian aunt, an autistic cousin, myself cope with mental illness, alcoholism is prevalent in my family. If I were to be offended anytime something of any of these things were portrayed in media and make a fuss over it, I would never get anything productive done. Ever. I would spend every moment railing against everything on TV, Radio, in movies and games, etc, etc. All to no response or effect. It's just, smh.

  13. Yeah, I piped up earlier due to just the rude, obnoxious post I saw. There's a mod out that working with the command console and just purchasing companions, I can do whatever I want. It just makes me resort to cheating, which I don't like doing.

However, the comments of "RPG's don't have respecs!" I am going to just revert to my roots here. This game is built off of the old 2nd edition and 3rd edition DnD games which the developers previously made. So some modern tabletop RPG equivalents.

    Pathfinder RPG: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/more-character-options/retraining

3.5 DND: See Players Handbook 2, it's not open source, so can't link it to you, but it's there.

Given folks are all "I played IWD and BG and I know what an RPG are and I think "insert opinion here"! fire and brimstone opinionated. I just find the hostility and rudeness absurd. I've been a DM since the mid 90's. I don't allow it in every game I run, but the enjoyment of my players is paramount, and if someone doesn't enjoy their character partway through my campaign, I let them rebuild their character within my character creation rules. It's just a simple ease of use/quality of life thing that is incredibly simple to allow and makes folks happy in bad situations.

Not everyone kickstarted this project, and even though I did, I just was of the opinion that I wanted to enter the game on day one, and play it. Not get my hands on a backer beta, not follow every bit of information obsidian put out. I ignore all of it, and the hype, to just simply enjoy the game I paid for when it came out and went off to do things in my life until it came out.

I also have had serious changes in my life in the past 2.5 years since I backed this game. That's a long time to be waiting for a game. I don't mind waiting, but lol, the just response I got for you know, having responsibilities that keep me from devoting my life to this game is absurd as well. It's disrespectful, and hence, I commented in regards to it. It's a game, I supported it just like everyone else who did. I'm playing it, just like everyone else who did. Being knocked like I'm inferior because I haven't lived and breathed the creation process the last 2.5 years and don't have all of the free time in the world to just replay this constantly is rude.

I'm doing a lot of what Obsidian did the past 2.5 years for this game outside of the programming/graphics aspects. I'm designing my own game world, and RPG system in addition to my everyday life. I understand what these guys have been going through here on that end. It's frankly, impressive what they have put together. I am enjoying the game. It's great. I just don't have an unlimited time frame to play to my hearts content. The sheer resistance to even a discussion about an ease of use feature like this that is prevalent in RPG's out there is mind boggling to me. Let alone the hostility and rude behavior along with it.

  14. I've been harsh about the premades elsewhere, and they are terrible for what I want out of them. However, it doesn't mean they are trash. Just not how I would build with the PC I am running now. With the conservative builds they have, you really need to just know what is coming at you through the game, and build a PC to fit the companions given to you. Which is the opposite way I would design a game like this.

  15. Having an issue with selecting the people in my group to hand experience to a specific person.

Initially I could just add XP to the whole group. Never anyone in particular. However, now, the console is having an exception no matter what I put into it. Not a huge deal, but running a group of custom PC's and I'd like to just even out the XP so the level at the same time instead of one at a time. Does anyone have the syntax I need to go through in order to do this? Is it:

    AddExperience NAME XP#

    Or something else?
