  1. Hopefully monsters are rare.

As said in another monster topic, I think I appreciate them a lot more in fantasy games when there's only a few of them out there hidden in the depths of the world, that are whispered about by NPCs a lot and mentioned in lore books, but very rare to actually encounter. There should be a sense of wonder and discovery when running into one.

If they're used all the time as bosses, they lose their appeal for me. I would much rather face tough human enemies as "bosses" most of the time, rather than monsters.

    -

As for types of monsters... nothing too alien, but nothing too overused either, like dragons.

Human enemies are often so much more fun to fight against because they bring the full range of tactical options coded for your own party, whereas monsters are often one-diimensional. I like the idea of less is more, a smaller bestiary but with each creature type presenting unique tactical challenges or dimensions in some way.

Otherwise, surely at least one type of enemy must exploit the stamina/health mechanic, e.g. slow heavy-hitters that drain health exclusively.

I'm a reverse of this, to be fair. I'm not saying you can't have creatures without sophistication, I'm merely applying that having a poor sad "amount" of creatures in the game as a price to this... Is not in my books, a favorable exchange...

Simply put, to me... Less is less in the monsters department... I guess however given that the games budget hit an extra one hundred and sixty thousand on top of the four million probably means we have little to be concerned. Lets hope they're staffed for both.

  2. Adam and I discussed this a while back. Our goal is to get a large assortment of creature types in PE. There is a huge list of requested creature types ( I made the list myself) and I am sure they won't all make it into the first game, but we should be able to get quite a few of them in. Undoubtedly, Josh will want to change some creatures on the list as the lore of PE continues to get fleshed out.

Here are a few things to remember.

    1. Our camera angle will allow us to make faster creatures. They won't need to be in cinematic cut scenes and the textures of the models will not need to be as detailed.

    2. With the camera angle, the rigs should require fewer animations to make them look good.

    3. We aren't as concerned about memory as newer CRPGs since we are PC exclusive. Having too many creatures types loaded at any given time creates real memory concerns on consoles. This is a big reason why you don't see combat encounters with 5 or 6 creature types (animation rigs) in most AAA console games. It's also one of the reasons you see smaller party sizes in those games.

There is always a trade off. I'm sure the large creatures in Dragon Age (that grappled party members) required a ton of animation support and testing. I'd guess this is one of the many reasons the creature variety was a little on the sparse side as the OP mentions.

Lastly, as the PE world gets bigger (with expansions and sequels) our bestiary will continue to grow. For example, BG2 benefited from the entire creature library of BG1.

Hearing that the list is "huge" gives me a good sense of security. I wonder what diabolical creations and artistic nightmares you've concocted for that menagerie you speak of... Hopefully things that surprise and appear unexpectedly...

  3. Those are valid points in the OP. I'd rather have a very varied bestiary than another big city and 10 levels of a gigadungeon. Monster models will be 3D and big cities will also need some 3D stuff, no? Will the big city 2 need some unique (creature) models as well? Is the team who develops creature art and models completely separated from the team who creates scenery art and models? There's 1,5 years left.

I think that's about my stance on this too. I too would rather have more beasts and fauna(be it plants and animals or demons and abominations) then simply more rooms to battle the same things I've already seen.

The peasantry... er, "nobility" here however claim that creature variety comes included with the extra content to be added via the stronghold, mega dungeon, and extra city. I state that such luxuries are lackluster "without" the above too. I personally have to take such things on word. But I think we can all agree on this.

A twenty floor dungeon loses some of its appeal if all you fight on all twenty floors of it are various "orcs".

  4. But I do mean it like this immediately got assaulted by what I remember to be "A giant HIDEOUS" Centipede... Which I'll add I never saw anywhere else EVER again. So I remember it "VERY" well. IT PARALYZED my warrior(main character), and nearly slew me.

    I guess you didn't play Baldur's Gate 1 ?

    Carrion Crawler :p

I've played both, and it was the first where I had this whole extravagant adventure... I think I was about thirteen years old when I played it... Still a young cat so the whole dungeons and dragons ruleset was completely new to me(and somewhat hard to learn walking in a blank slate). Hell... When's that Remake of this going to be done anyways...?

  5. Well iteration time will be shorter than when making IE games due to 10 years worth of faster hardware and improved technology. They said it only takes half an hour to render a 2D Backdrop now instead of a few days so ... who knows.

I doubt it'll be anywhere near the level of Baldur's Gate 2 ... but one can only hope.

A good thing BG2 did is make the most out of it's models. A Ghoul model was recolored and used as a Ghast and a Lacedon (and probably a couple others as well).

Thinking back on Baldur's Gates creature compendium... They really did have a lot of good stuff in that game didn't they...? I dare say unexpected creatures would pop out "here, there". Hell... Reminds me of a stroll my characters took through the City sewers of that game once... !!!tALe tiME!~~

So this one time, I was going through the town. I hadn't saved in ages and found an entry way into the sewers. So I was walking through those sewers(still hadn't saved). And was Assailed by kobolds. Now in Baldurs Gate, kobolds were a "RIOT" to kill, They'd bark and holler and like lays chips, you can't stop with just one(as in killing one). So I slew them good. But I do mean it like this immediately got assaulted by what I remember to be "A giant HIDEOUS" Centipede... Which I'll add I never saw anywhere else EVER again. So I remember it "VERY" well. IT PARALYZED my warrior(main character), and nearly slew me.

A heal kept her alive and I JUST bout made it out, And then a green slime threw its ooze on her. I killed that, and pressed Q(quicksave) but noticed my character was mysteriously green. Ten seconds later, a video of my characters hand turning to dust played... So I reloaded the quick save and noticed, my character was green...

Good times good times... Honestly lost those thirty five minutes of work. Now the above is what I call "An adventure". Oh, and those vargoulies in Planescape Torment were horrifying.

  6. Wait? You mean you can't make a game with only one enemy type, called Darkspawn? Or if we're generous 2 (Cerberus, Reaper). Someone better tell some developer.

But yeah, I have no doubt there will be a great variety of enemies. Unlike most modern RPG's.

I will be dissapointed without rakshasa though, we definitely need some kind of enemy resembling it xD

OH man, Story of gaming right there. I swear in Dragon Age my character herself said, "Oh, it looks like more darkspawn." and I was all like, "YOU THINK?!". That had to have been the worst case of this problem in any game ever made. Swear it was a traumatizing effect. I don't think Dragon Age II even worked on fixing that... Hell mighta been worse... Anyone know if DA2 Had a larger or smaller beastiary of creatures then DA1?

  7. Anyone else here getting the feeling Obsidian is spreading themselves really thin with all this talk on BIG goals. And that Mega dungeons a WHOLE new story in itself if its the same creatures and monsters on "every" floor.

Yeah, Just imagine it. This big huge world filled with a miniscule amount of wildlife and fauna, that after like two hours of playing you'd have seen near everything? Does that sound fun?! I can see it now, they'll be all like, "We got bears, wolves, and boars, that's a wrap for wild animals". And lets not get started with a lackluster variety of undead(there's more then zombies and skeletons), but I'm sure some folks don't even want to see "that".

You know what I'd like to see, Maybe not as they are in our prehistoria... But I'd love to see dinosaurs, Yeah YOU can bet JURASS I'd like to see dinosaurs! Though once again I'm sure AGAIN people wouldn't want to see this either... Or better yet, how about some original Creations? Dungeons and Dragons was Bloated with the sort. From Carrion Crawlers, to Ankhegs, to Vrocks(You know, the demons)... And even I remember my first encounter with the now WAY overdone Gelatinous cube(still welcome sight)

Do people even care if their adventure is full of bizarre creatures? Maybe folks really do just want to kill the same things... Over and over and over... And never want to slay something truly Bizarre and monstrous... I'm sure Obsidian knows this too...

Do "you" care if they save their budget on this feature, and keep the creature variety limited to an amount countable on ones hands? If there were only "ten" creatures in the game(not including the main humanoid races), would that be something that hurts your enjoyment of this game?

Hell, What creatures would you be upset "not" seeing? Or better yet, what creatures would you "BE" upset seeing?

  8. I think their existance is acceptable. I don't see the overarcing need for them to be purchaseable or necessary however. Something guards in town are seen ontop of and maybe a few random battles you fight NPC's on them. Little more.

"CERTAINLY" not a resource drain to more important better features. But added yes. Thats appropriate, They add a level of brutality to the front line of any battlefield, look at movies and battlefield art, Ive drawn art based off of battlefields, Its my favorite subject to portray(dare I say specialty). Its probably infact ingrained on your head to be intimidated and afraid of a man with a large weapon on a horse.

Games these days use horses as "MOVEMENT SPEED INCREASE LOL". Inappropriate to use them alone for that. Anyways, I stick to original statement. add yes, drain resources on, no.

  9. I want an abode that ingame seems like it was worth a 200'000$ investment. Aka that 200'000 space bux were invested into this feature. There are kickstarter games out there that work off far less then even "this".

Just saying... off of that statement alone... ehh, Maybe something a bit class dependant? Or that is filled with features unique for each class. The wizard would perhaps adore a lab and library, while the Fighter would sure find a forge/blacksmith and perhaps sparring partners useful(an army or keep mayhaps?). Furthermore, I would like some quests given by the abode in question perhaps...?

Or maybe we'll just get a small questless house, that you pay 2000 gold for. It stores your items, is made of wood, and all the companions you dismissed are there. After that, there is no further content to the house.

  10. Bout two weeks ago, there was a scene in an anime I watched called Beserk. Good anime that, terrible that they didn't complete it.

Anyways basically Guts is out to assasinate a minister, but he must do so without being seen. During the act the ministers son(of around seven) becomes a witness and guts puts him down as well, but is scarred by this evil deed he wrought. He threw away his ethics for the man he served.

Kinda woulda ruined the plot if when witnessed by the child, in his attempt to strike him down, the child was immune to damage.

Better yet, animated televison gets free rein on using children to move its plot forward in such a manner, but games? Nooooo. Besides, good arc there for any assasination mission in a game.

If you were doing an assasination quest in this game where you weren't allowed to be seen and the child of the person you murdered saw you, what would "you" do...? Better yet what would be at stake for letting him go. Now put THAT morality choice in there! Sure as hell beats "give bread to prisoner for key, or stab prisoner and take key.
