  1. So iD Software managed to inspire the most important developers thus far in the history of FPS: Valve.

That's some weird videogame historical revisionism. iD Software didn't inspire Valve and in those days Half-Life was seen as something other then pure FPS. Wolfenstein 3D, Dooms and Quake were all GAMES first... well, actually there were no real story elements, just game mechanics. In Half-Life there were heavy scripting (what, mobs don't attack us right away... I can talk to these scientists? ), real storyline, paced action, cutscenes... even the Quake engine was heavily modified.

iD did inspire many developers. Something like Serious Sam (inspired by both iD games and Duke) or Painkiller are some of the clearer examples. ID themself can't write their way out of paperbag and all the games since Quake have more or less been failures (not financial, but failed to reach the level of "modern" FPS ).

FPS genre is already rather old and it has splintered into many different directions and all have evolved (or sometimes devolved) since the early days. Halo is important point in FPS games history, not because the game is anything special, but because it helped to kill PC domination in this genre. Actually many younger games don't even know about pre-Halo FPS on PC (they have most likely only played console FPS). Some could argue that even Halo is ancent history already and latest Modern Warfare is where's it at. Can't blame 'em, since Halo is 10 years old. When I played Wolfenstain 3D in 1992, I sure as hell didn't think about Battlezone from 1983 (I had that too on c64, didn't like it).

  2. No. New Vegas was alright because they received all the assets and engine of Failout 3 from Bethesda

I'd argue that New Vegas was alright (if just barely) despite assets and HORRIBLE Gamebryo engine. Buggy engine (meaning that Obsidian couldn't fix certain issues even if they wanted to), terrible animations, constricted ruleset, suboptimal shooting and melee mechanics, VAT issues, sound problems, scripting problems...

Sure, environment assets are ok (as they are in Skyrim too) but still way behind the Rockstars RAGE engine or Cryteks engine(s). There's huge improvement from Oblivion to Skyrim, but no way Bethesda's stuff is state of the art (sand box or not).

  3. Deus Ex Human Revolution (SE) had a big, full size AAA team. I'd say similar to Assassins Creed (Ubi)

Some developers like Rockstar are on league of their own... maybe they should be called AAAA :)

Today Tokyo-headquartered Square Enix announced plans to expand Deus Ex: Human Revolution studio Eidos Montreal by 100 staff to 450 total; meanwhile, Hitman development is set to begin at a new 150-head Square Enix Montreal studio.
  4. Then you run into the problem that any kind of fighter build becomes completely dependent on proper monster pulling.

And that's alright, at least on higher difficulty settings. I be able to pull, perch, CC (crowd control) correct numbers of mobs is one of those things that require skill and/or understanding game mechanics. This is why nearly all MMOGs use this mechanic and even create classes / skill sets just for that job.

  5. They keep sending me a message to change my password. I keep ignoring it. Go beta test or your own game. IF I buy it I expect it to work. If I test it I expect to be paid.

    Haha agreed!

I haven't beta tested a game since the Asheron's Call 2 (was it 2002 or something) and it's so much pointless frustration that I wouldn't recommend it for anyone.

  6. PCs days ain't numbered, but we are niche and we are less important than the console version. Just the way it is.

I'd say PCs days are numbered because not even AAA developers bother to do anything except crappy port (even when Steam would suggest over 1 million units sold). Thus we're playing console games on PC that might have bit improved graphical options (but certainly not take full advantage from DirectX10 or 11) but with sub-optimal UI. Heck, people start to buy console controllers for the PC (even for FPS) because games are that badly designed or optimized for the PC. That's like nightmare scenario for me because my main problems with consoles are not consoles per se, but lack of mouse + keyboard support (from game mechanics to difficulty settings) and too long hardware generation cycles.

  7. Found
(master difficulty). Have to check if player is skilled at all :sorcerer:

I think I have to find better "Let's play" video series. It's blind run and person don't seem to have good grasp of game mechanics. He also misses a lot of environmental clues. Master (highest) difficulty seem to be balanced rather nice but he manages to die because of simple mistakes like rushing into group of enemies, not healing faster (or early) enough or lack of stamina.

PC version seem to crash just like all the other Bethesda games and UI is absolutely hideous. I'd recommend everyone to wait 6-12 month for few offical patches and tons of mods. Maybe Steam summer sales or next Quakecon.

  8. I'm going to skip Skyrim untill few patches and some Steam sale but I'd certainly like to see some good "Let's play" videos. If anyone finds good no deaths, hard (or whatever the max may be in Skyrim) difficulty, let me know :(

Been following Linus117 run on youtube and easy difficulty certainly makes it a very boring video.

(master difficulty). Have to check if player is skilled at all :)
  9. Bioware also don't like to do open world sandboxes. Like 'em or not, GTAs and (often crappy) Bethesda games sell really well. Bioware's other weakness is lack of extremely solid shooting mechanics. I dislike most things about Modern Warfare brand but damn they create fine shooting mechanics. Now they go directly against World of Warcraft. Not World of Warcraft 7 years ago but today. I'd argue that designing MMOG features that keep players interested (from casual to hardcore) for years is probably hardest thing to do correctly in gaming biz.

  10. Bioware goes after leaked Mass Effect 3 data. They even requested posts to be nuked from the sites such as Neogaf.com

You know, the stuff like this o:)

    * CAPITAL SHIPS are Sovereign-class Reapers two kilometers in length.

They typically target the dreadnoughts, defense installations, and

industrial cities of organic civilizations. Experts believe the Reapers

harvest a single species of organics during each cycle of extinction to

    create these massive ships.

    * DESTROYERS are the 160-meter-long workhorses of the Reaper fleet. They

engage cruisers and other, smaller ships, as well as communications

posts and enemy command centers. Research suggests destroyers are

created from those species that are not harvested to make capital ships.

  11. Ewww at Ashley's model. Nose job and botox bath.

I'm not totally against the various game modes but it's highly unlikely that Bioware would use valuable resources for optional RPG / story content if they can get away with just pure combat. In the end, I think this is just another step away from RPG genre.

  12. There is no argument here. Anyone who has played both knows SR2 is better than GTA4. They are trying to do two different things, and SR2 is much better at what it is trying to do.

    Have to disagree with that.

I love the contrast in GTA games. Player characters try to be sane (and often failing) in the insane world. It's like warped european view point of the Fox News americana. Personally I'd like it for to be even more subtle, but real-life republican party debates (seriously, that recent Herman Cain ad could be from GTA 4 ) and tea party movement make that impossible.

In Saints Row universe everyone know it's insane and act like it. I'd say it's too direct and goofy. No highs and lows. Maybe it's the way of the future and those who love such games will have jolly good time with 'em. I hope GTA brand still continues with it's current path.

  13. BUT, they linked those friends to bonuses... Dwayne gave you a crew of homies, your cousin gave you a taxi service, Little Jacob gave ya guns, and packie blew stuff up. Not to mention the girlfriends (who could get heat off you and raise your hp in times of need if you called em).

    That's what's really bothersom.

Those bonuses are really pitiful outside roleplaying purposes. I didn't use Dwaynes crew more then once (just to see what they did... and they barely did anything), Taxi drivers dialogue was hilarious but ultimately stealing car or hailing normal cab was much faster, most of the time you could drive (or take taxi) to normal gun shop faster then wait for Jacob to spawn... to sometimes less then optimal location. Packie carbomb was extremely fun to use when fooling around, but really time consuming to get. Brucie helicopter transport was just way too slow, compared to just about anything.

Lawyer chick bonus was same as Packies brother ( -2 stars max and at that points cops are no problem), Up town girl bonus ( -50% cloth sales for a day... well, money ain't problem at that point of game anymore). Nurse bonus was ok ( full health after small rest), but missions were usually easy enough or had armor / health packs.

  14. Uh no thats still an unnecessary annoyance.

By that math 5 'friends' would result in a call happening pretty much every time you save the game.

Even if you don't for some reason trust the autosave (don't advance in-game time at all), saves only take 8 hours of in-game time. Missions can be done again right away even if you fail, so saves are only required if you plan to play "perfect" run or have like 10 minutes to play the game. 24 in-game hours are bit under hour of real time. In my 3 complite runs of GTA 4, 2 runs of Lost and Damned, 3 runs of Ballad of the Gay Tony, my longest single segment played time was 2 hours 34 minutes. Most likely I never experienced "friendly character" calling me twice during the same run. It's more likely that I called 'em twice :sorcerer:

So with 5 friends, you're required to ignore call 5 times every 2 hours of real time. Or perform 5 extra clicks to cancel incoming call.

  15. There is a point were trying to push an 'optional' content onto a player becomes a major annoyance.

    Major annoyance?

One call per roughly 2 in-game days per active friend character. And you can even choose ringtone and/or set to vibration. Man, talk about first world problems :sorcerer:

  16. You forgot to mention those whiny 'friends' that kept calling you to take them everywhere. God, I hope they skipped that idea in GTA5.

Personally I can't understand why this bothered so many players. I mean "friend activities" are optional. You could say no, hung up right away or refuse to answer (my fav real-life thing to do o:) ) . In expansion you could just turn off the whole feature.

I answered calls for roleplaying purposes, to learn more about the characters and generally enjoy well written (and funny) dialogue between Nico and NPCs. I actually always took the long route around the town just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Same with radio station talk shows and TV shows :sorcerer:

Rockstar deserves Big Boss dual eye-patch double salute!

  17. I find GTA 4's driving physics to be the best among all car games I've played

Same. Also I love the euphoria physics engine in general too. It's not unique to GTA games but it's still by far the best I've seen. Houser Brothers and Lazlow writing is some of the best in computer biz. Rockstar also creates open worlds like no others. They are simply the best I've experienced so far.

  18. Ok, I don't like to ask links in non-serious boards but I argue if that 70% is correct, it's characters, not accounts. If it's accounts, Blizzard is making even more money then I expected.

With quick search, I only found - World Of Warcraft: 70% Of Trial Players Give Up Before Level Ten. Trial players, meaning those who don't have actual active account or bought the full game. Including, but not limited to spam mules, gold sale mules...
