  1. When back in 2017 I heard of multiclassing in the then upcoming PoE2, I wanted to combine my two favorite classes in the game: Cipher and Paladin.

I thought the synergy between the two would be monstrous: Faith and Conviction and the defensive arsenal of the Paladin would make a squishy Cipher more than capable to dish out all the damage possible without dying. At the same time, Cipher has renewable resources, so, yay, great for solo. You never wanna run out of fire.

In my first playthrough, I didn't go solo, and because of the tooltip warning against multiclass, I opted for pure Cipher.

By the time I did multiple playthroughs to know the game better, Paladin got nerfed to death:

    - increased cost to Greater Lay on Hands

    - 100% to 25% Virtous Triumph proc chance

    - FoD nerfs left and right

In light of these changes, I deemed any Paladin tank build inferior to any Fighter multiclass, having Unbending become better compared to GLoH, and not having "infinite resources" by killing enemies anymore. Boy, was I wrong.

Cipher, that to many is considered one of the most boring and underpowered classes - and the rationale behind their opinion escapes me, having this class access to all types of affliction and a whopping 300+ raw damage nuke - got nerfed, most notably with:
    - Body Attunement from -4/+4 to -2/+2 armor

    - Borrowed Instinct (literally single best spell in the game) from 30s base duration to 20s.

    - Time Parasite from -50% to -25% (note: this is one of the few way that allowed to achieve ~0s recovery at lvl 20)

I recently decided to prove myself wrong, and tried an Inquisitor. I've always been a great fan of the Ascended, which for many (party, mostly) builds is insanely good, thanks to its ability to get max focus and then spam the best single target nuke in the game on literally everyone. Alas, Ascend got nerfed, too (from 20s to 12s base duration).

    What was I left with?

    Base class, meh.

Beguiler, definitely not good for non-Rogue multiclass.

And Soulblade. The latter can be surprisingly good when combined with Whispers of the Endless Path, as one can Soul Strike on multiple targets, recover focus at the same time by hitting the secondary ones, thus never actually being starved of focus. The counterattack on top, allows you to keep focus high. I would like to say that this is the best weapon for this build, but what I discovered by going through all the SSS challenges, is that it is not.

The best weapon for a character with all the afflictions, with high defenses but excelling in none of them (compared to Tricksters, Skaen Priest, Wizards) is versatility.

This build will not point out (except for a few slots) a fixed equipment. What we aim to achieve is the best Armor against every encounter. Therefore, we will focus on boosting Armor. Similarly, the other side of the coin is having good Penetration alongside with it. We plan to have a versatile arsenal.

And since we decided that versatility is the name of the game, we will save all the unnecessary ability points from the Paladin tree, and invest them to get the Cipher spells that really matter.

    THE RACE

Pale Elf. +4 Freeze and Fire armor means one thing: versatility.

    THE BACKGROUND

Anything, but White that Wends for RP, and bonus to Perception never hurts.

    THE STATS

    Might           15

    Constitution 7

    Dexterity     15

    Perception   20 (race+region)

    Intellect       18

    Resolve       3

Justification: as Victor Creed / aka Raven Darkholme/ aka diamondsforever always says: we are more than justified to dump RES, as we can make up for it with Berath's Blessing, Pet bonuses, and No-Rest approaches. For more on this, please do consult the thread in this very same forum (https://goo.gl/oda1EU). High PER is because nobody wants to waste focus to see Cipher Powers miss. Good MIG 'cause none of the Paladin passives/actives increases our spell damage (which is mostly DoT). Good DEX 'cause some Powers take long to cast. CON on 7 is what I think every build should have: if you have access to heals, CON is unimportant; if you have ridiculously high Defenses, CON is unimportant. This class is not the best at neither of the two approches, but doing decently in both turns out to be more than enough. The "7" score specifically is because with Berath Blessing and Effigy's Sacrifice - Durance it allows to hit the 10 CON sweet spot, and being bonus/penalties multiplicative, one would rather not have any malus to HP, in case some ridiculous burst occurs (there is a Druid in SSS that hits for 200+ with 30 Penetration with Sunlance. We definitely don't want to go from full HP to 0 against such enemies). High INT, cause it's a caster/buffer/debuffer.

    THE SUBCLASSES

    Goldpact and Soulblade.

    THE ABILITIES

1 Whispers of Treason + SoulStrike  ; Lay on Hands + Gilded Enmity

    2 Deep Faith

    3 Iron Will

4 Draining Whip ; Paladin Auras

    5 Inspired Defenses

    6 Retribution

    7 Hammering Thoughts

    8 Sworn Rival

    9 Greater Lay on Hands

10 Body Attunement ; Exalted Endurance

    11 Secret Horrors

    12 Soul Ignition

13 Borrowed Instinct ; Righteous Soul

    14 Ringleader

    15 Practiced Healer

    16 Disintegration ; Virtuous Triumph

    17 The Empty Soul

    18 Bear's Fortitude

19 Fractured Volition ; Stoic Steel

20 Weapon Style: choose what you like the most. This build benefits from all three.

    Justification:

"NO FLAMES OF DEVOTION, WTF", yes. Ability is overrated. When you get a +25% damage from Retribution and a +20% from Draining Whip, spending a point of Zeal for a +10% lash rather than on a usage of Lay on Hands is very, very unefficient. Also, that would mean losing 2 Abilities from level 7 up. Now, I sincerely believe that everything above on PL 3+ is better than Eternal Devotion. If you think otherwise and can point out why in the comments, I'd happily discuss.

Now: why not going for Sworn Rival instead? A +20% damage that returns the point whenever you kill. More on that here: https://goo.gl/j4dnPG

Body Attunement and Exalted Endurance on the same level is one of those things I always regret, as the two bonuses don't stack. But reducing enemy Armor is too good to pass on.

Secret Horrors for the Frightened Status, Fractured Volition for the Weakened. It's better to have two Tier2 Afflictions than a mix of Tier1/Tier2 from picking just one of them. Also, big AoE Frightened is OP as it prevents multiple enemies from using offensive Abilities on you (see: Risen Armsman, Risen Mages, Warlock Scrivers, Naga Maradeur, etc.).

Soul Ignition: a huge range poor man's Disintegration that can be spammed more freely when many ranged enemies with low Fortitude annoys us from the back

Borrowed Instinct: I sincerely believe that a -8Int-8Per debuff that stacks with any affliction and gives you +20 Accuracy and +20 to all Defenses is the best spell in the game. Feel free to think otherwise.

Righteous Soul: now now, being immune to Poison Nagas (SSS), Insect Plague, Toxic Strike and many others with one single ability, who wouldn't want that.

Practiced Healer: combined with Dawnstar Blessing and Footprints of Aku Taha, gives us a modest x2.5 multiplier to all our healings. Not bad, eh. A must.

Virtuous Triumph: getting some more Zeal back on kill, although rarely and unreliably, is always good.

Disintegration: Best. Single. Target. Nuke. Handle with care and try not to kill with it, as it destroys unique equipment. Had to reload many times some boss fights when I realised that I "accidentally" crit-ed them with it, thus destroying their drops.

  2. TBF any class can kill the Queen solo. My current strategy is to wait for her to cast the scream ability, then I use the bottleneck at the bottom of the map to "block" her with some spiders. Queen gets stuck, I kill all the spiders except those blocking her, get her low enough, kill her with ranged weapon with enough penetration (razor skewers, ring of the marksman, high enchantment level).

The only caveat is having enough regeneration and armor to tank the spiders, 14 piercing with a ring of greater regeneration is more than enough. Alas, this can be achieved for most classes/ with potions.

  3. I checked the game data and I see what you are hinting at. Should we mention this to the devs?

She wants a third part before she forges the three parts together. I imagine the third part will also be gold with a red inlaid jewel. Try mentally picturing the two existing parts as one incomplete item if you want a hint as to what she is going to be forging for us.

Edit: So I poked around a bit, and it looks like there is an item that can be forged with just two of the three pieces.  That item is present in the game's files and appears to be functional.  There also seem to be some different options as to what be forged from the items, but those items are also not fully implemented yet.  So yeah, it might just be that Izzia is still bugged.

  4. Alrite, has anyone figured out what the hell she's after?

For now she seems to react to the Nerysclias' Skull and the Tooth of Tomowai. But she's still not satisfied. I think I have tried to interact with her in every playthrough I have so far, some of them where I did all the quests/ got most of the items in the game, yet she still says she's looking for "unusual metals".

Am I missing something or is it something that will be be part of the future DLC? Or is it some backer exclusive content?

  5. I've actually had this happen to me and had to repeat the fight for it, but I was able to loot it then.  Have you tried placing it in a personal inventory?

I believe you are not being given that option in the Crucible fights. Will try to figure out what went wrong next playthrough, I guess.

Btw: do you remember which challenge was it?

  6.

Yeah, I don't ever plan on doing solo anything ;)

I'm pretty sure that's rather impossible for some of the challenges, e.g. the Library Imp one ("In defense of the written word" I believe?), unless someone can find a way to outheal a non dispellable 60 raw damage /3s with no save for about 10 minutes worth of fight

  7.

I just reached level 6 and you listed One Stands Alone as the ability pick at that level, but it's a Power Level III barbarian ability, which is only accessible at level 7 with a multiclass. I don't know if it's been patched or something, maybe it comes from The Beast of Winter? What would you recommend instead?

Right now I'm going with Confident Aim since there is not a lot of choices left, and I could use graze to hit, but it could be respec later. Almost everything else is active or linked to weapon choices (only leaves Fast Runner, Determation, Accurate Carnage and Wilder Hunter). Also it means skipping an ability later on in order to be able to pick One Stands Alone, I'm thinking Bull's Will because it's nice against the Arcane Dampener like you mentioned but it's a little specific and there is not much room here.

Or did I miss something? Please let me know. If I spot any other change I'll list them here, but the rest of the abilities seems fine.

Yeah sorry that was a bad typo from a copy and paste. I think Determination is the best call here, and One Stands Alone at 7 over Bloodlust would be my call. But it's anyone's call.

  8. With one exception: why not Clear Out? I loved it with my Morning Star Berserker/Devoted.

It does really nice damage on clumped mobs - because Carnage will trigger on every hit of the AoE attack. And it will apply Shaken and Body Blows to all enemies you hit with it. It will apply prone and push the enemies around as well. I mean the latter might not be desired sometimes, but still...

I wasn't aware about this interaction, that sounds great!

I done last 2 runs with Black Jacket/Berserker (with same gear and same primary weapon). I didn't understand how people can ignore such cool 2H AOE attacks like WotEP - Spin Assault, or Wicked Beast or Stalker's Patience

On my opinion 2 pen, can't compensate such cool skills, combine them with Avenging Storm from Heaven's Cacophony

That's actually sexy. And here I thought Blackjacket was cool just because of Scordeo's :D

  9. A howling immortal one-man-army that smashes everything in its path with high Hit-to-Crit conversion.

"Sir! The third cohort has been repeled, they suffered heavy casualties! Should we send the cavalry?"

"Send the cavalry, the fourth, the fifth, the bloody reserves too! The enemy has us clearly outnumbered!"

    "...Sir, it's just one man."

    "what."

    "With a Morningstar, Sir."

    https://imgur.com/a/bi7qvIL

Until now, Barbarian has been a luckluster class to me, lacking the other martial classes high accuracy, and with not enough sustain to fulfill its role like it did in PoE1. Not to mention lack of any obvious CC.

However, the Morningstar modal completely changed my mind: in combination with Brute Force and Might afflictions, one can effectively increase their Accuracy by +35, by lowering the enemies Fortitude of that much. Note that the modal, while having a -25% damage penalty, can be turned off after scoring the first hit, as it persists for ~12s, and then on again.

Morningstars are underrepresented - the only two unique ones are Saru-Sichr and The Willbreaker. While the fomer is quite unimpressive, The Willbreaker has the following perks:

    - 10% attack speed

    - 10% Hit to Crit

    - High raw damage over time on Resolve affliction ridden enemies (in this build, we will reach about 90 raw damage over 20s, by just hitting things. RIP deep wounds)

    - 10% Chance to Shaken on Hit

Combine the former with the 30% Hit-to-Crit from Berserker, and another 25% from Intuitive, and we get to a nice ~53% Hit-to-Crit. And that's why we turn at the Devoted subclass, which adds more penetration on top of Tenacious, and additional Crit damage, all the same without losing in versatility, as Morningstars have good damage combination (Pierce/Crush).

The issue of self inflicted damage during Frenzy is addressed through spamming of Unbending Shield, Ring of Greater Regeneration, and last but not least, Devil's Due upgrade from The Devil of Caroc's Breastplate (incidentally coming with the Intellect Affliction Resistance we need), which provides healing on scoring Crits. Top this with a Voidward (-25% Raw damage, necessary because at high level and Might Frenzy ends up dealing about 30raw/3s), and you obtain a self-sustaining unstoppable killer.

I've tested this character in successfully clearing the Drowned Barrows, Nemnok included. I strongly believe this build is suitable for solo'ing PotD, even though it will suffer A LOT before getting its core ability, i.e. Brute Force, i.e. lvl 16. But again, in this game one can reach that level without much fighting.

    Here's the build.

    Race

Human, of course. Fighting Spirit is a free +7 accuracy. And we are able to keep our HP stationary.

    Class

Berserker and Devoted. The former gives high Hit-to-Crit, Penetration, good Recovery and Carnage. The latter, more Hit-to-Crit, more Penetration, less Recover, ridiculous sustain.

    Culture and Background

The White that Wends, as Perception will have to be maxed. This because the advantages of Hit over Graze are self-evident, thanks to high Hit-to-Crit.

Explorer for the bonus in History.

    Attributes

    Might 17 (+2 BB +1GotM)

    Consitution 3 (+2 BB +1DuranceEffigy)

    Dexterity 12 (+2 BB)

    Perception 19 (+2 BB +1 Cauldron)

    Intellect 16 (+2 BB)

    Resolve 11 (+2 BB)

    Justification:

High Might because we want to kill enemies before they kill us.

Who needs Consitution when you can heal everything.

Dexterity is always good, but other stats have priorities, we shall reduce Recovery with Mob Stance and high Engagement, Frenzy, Armored Grace, and Pets.

Perception maxed because Accuracy is king.

Good Intellect for duration of buffs.

Resolve not dumpstered because we want to save ourselves some debuff time.

    Skills

Arcana 13, Athletics 10, and History maxed. The points in Arcana are enough for using Avenging Storm scrolls, which come always handy when you have Carnage; History because of The Giftbearer's Cloth.

Note that lowering enemies' Fortitude allows you to hit more easily with Plague of Insect scrolls ;)

    Abilities

    Berserker | Devoted

    |

    1 Frenzy | Disciplined Barrage

    2 Blooded |

    3 Barbaric Yell |

4 Thick Skinned | Fighter Stances

    5 | Two Handed Style

    6 Determination |

7 One Stands Alone | Disciplined Strikes

    8 | Hold the Line

    9 Bull's Will |

    10 Unflinching | Vigorous Defenses

    11 Spirit Frenzy |

    12 Barbaric Shout |

    13 Interrupting Blows | Unbending

    14 | Mob Stance

    15 | Armored Grace

16 Brute Force | Refreshing Defenses

    17 Leap |

    18 | Weapon Specialization

19 Spirit Tornado | Unbending Shield

    20 Blood Thirst |

Justification: Skipped Savage Defiance because Robust is negligible compared to all the other heals this character has access to; also, costs too much Rage, which we will need to spam the staple of this build: Spirit Tornado. Not only it deals decent damage, but the Terrified acts as an Interrupt: cast Spirit Tornado (no matter if it is already active!) when you see undesirable enemy abilities about to go off, namely Arcane Dampener, which will probably kill you right away. The rest of the Rage should be used on Leap, a gap closing tool that comes in handy every now and then to hit the backlines quickly, and Barbaric Shout, large AoE Shaken affliction (great in combination with The Willbreaker's "The Mind Makes Real" upgrade), increases by 3 your Engagement, leading to a nice total of 7, with Hold the Line, Thick Skinned and Blackened Plate Armor Helm; thus Mob Stance can potentially bless us with a -35% Recovery time.

I skipped Accurate Carnage as Carnage deals raw damage, therefore making it unaffected by grazing. Bull's Will is because Will is never high enough vs Arcane Dampener.

Spirit Tornado and Unbending Shield should be always up and running, as we have the resources to do so (massive heal, Devil of Caroc +2 class resource pool, Gauntlets of Discipline). The former applies Staggered on Hit, which means -10 Fortitude to the enemy, which means a good bonus for hitting with Brute Force.

    Equipment

Weapon: The Willbreaker. Hit-to-Crit, Shaken affliction, tremendous DoT. Could we ask for more?

Chest: The Devil of Caroc's Breastplate. Provides the much needed Resistance to Intellect Afflictions, heal on Crit (and we will Crit a lot), expanded Resource Pool. Sweet.

Head: Blackened Plate Helm. Bonus Perception and Engagement. Note that Helm of the Falcon gives better recovery than 1 extra engaged, but BPH looks more badass. :p

Back: The Giftbearer's Cloth. Combine this baby with Refreshing Defenses (which usually needs to be used only once per fight, thanks to our low Deflection), and we will reach 150+ defenses.

Neck: Strand of Favor. Possibly the best amulet in game.

Feet: Footprints of Ahu Taka. Bonus Dex and +10% healing.

Hands: Gauntlets of Discipline. Let's be honest: would you like any puny bonus from any other bracer, or one additional use of Unbending Shield? Exactly. Get these babes.

Waist: Pretty much anything, but a bonus ~130 heal from an additional Second Wind makes me go for the Undying Burden.

Ring1: Voidward. 30 damage every 3 seconds from Frenzy at max level are no joke. Cutting it down to 22 is not bad.

Ring2: Ring of the Solitary Wanderer. If enemy has no significant debuffs, Ring of Greater Regeneration.

  10. It is kinda fixed but on riposte build it is still very effective because it attacks in 360 aoe every time someone misses you.

that means if you are attacked by say 6 enemies at once and they all miss you get 6 aoe attacks against all of them at once.

But Riposte procs with a 20% chance, so that'd be 1.2 attacks on average. Do the attack launched with Wahai Poraga Riposte effect the extra +3 targets as well?

  11. I tried this build myself earlier this week. Looked fine, until I got interrupted. Then I died. And then it kept happening. Very squishy against anything that has an interrupt, or multiple enemies that can interrupt (and I had maxed CON with 2 to 3 less INT, PER and MIG). Nemnok cloak effect didn't last long enough to get out of the chain interrupts (full disclosure: the fight I'm talking about is killing the whole second floor of the Valiant Trading Post in Queen Berth, which is pretty much a quick and easy way to check whether a build works), and having a +65% damage intake with 60 Deflection Vs enemies with 110+ accuracy - until they activated intuitive strikes, which made things worse - meant getting blown the duck up by crits.

How much have you playtested the build? Have you had any similar chain-lock experiences?

I'd go with Rekvu's Fractured Cask to cover that, also considering that helm of the falcon is not as good as it used to be.

Also, how is lord Darryn's "the only pollaxe worth a damn" when Wahai Poraga is out there :D

  12.

While testing I came upon (debugItems) the Ragged Cloak, a Skaen-themed cloak that deals damage to enemies on being crit.

My question is, can you acquire it in game?

I join, if someone found something from these items (Ragged Cloak, Fenan's Finery) - I'll be happy to know about it.

Onepahua is dropped by the Hanua Prince. It's even said in their description! :D
