Solutions

  1. buckyball60's post in Linux: Black screen and pointer after first sequence leading into Ruins was marked as the answer   
    FIXED.  One of two things fixed it: I changed gpu drivers AND I found that .local/share/PillarsOfEternity was owned by root.  I couldnt save a file if I wanted to...  Fixed that with a chown.

    Everything seems to be working now.
