I don't know how to feel about the skill/level up system in Diablo 3. The player has access to all skills upon meeting certain level requirements and there are no points for character customization. I understand that there will be lots of customization through equipment and skill runes but I'm uneasy about a staple of the genre being removed. Hopefully it turns out alright.

Team Fortress 2 has now adopted the Free to Play model. As in free to download and play and financially supported through micro-transactions.

Steam has just added a Free to Play section to their store: http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free%2...?snr=1_4_4__100

Never noticed it before.. it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it but it's there. It looks like some sort of full screen effect filter as it appears consistently in the area no matter if looking at close objects, the distant landscape or the sky.
Upon further investigation it looks as if it's an effect that makes the top portion of the screen brighter to simulate the sun in the more open areas. I also noticed that when hitting the "Print Screen" key to take a screenshot the effect disappears and then fades back in quickly.

now what I personally don't understand is why free to play MMOs use the same design, when they should be mimicking TF2
Many of the items that one can purchase in free MMOs "expire" after a set time. There are also often lots of one use items such as stat reset scrolls or extra potent health potions for sale. In both cases the longer a customer plays the game the more items they will rent/use.
Essentially the expiring/one use item model ends up mimicking the monthly subscription model.

Reading some of the user comments it appears the reviewer was overzealous and or mistaken in the part of the review I quoted. Anyway, according to TerminX:
You aren't "forced to kill" the impregnated twins, they die in a scripted event without any player interaction. They don't "plead with you to let them live", either. Duke also doesn't crack abortion jokes when you kill women, those lines are triggered when you kill baby aliens. The game still too over the top for me but I thought I would add corrections before someone ragged on me for posting misleading information
@Calax I do think the misogynistic tone and crass humor adds a polarizing effect that causes some reviewers to really hate the game.

Another (non positive) review for the Duke: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2011...y-offensive.ars
...Duke arrives at a point where two nude ladies promise to lose their pregnancy weight from bearing their alien children, and they plead with you to let them live. (These are the same characters who performed fellatio on you during the beginning sequences of the game.)The only way past this section of the game is to kill both women.
...You see, the women in the alien craft are being forcibly impregnated by the aliens, and during your journey, you hear a mixture of screams and sexual noises. After I accidentally blew up a few of these female victims in a firefight, Duke made a joke about abortion.
No thanks, that's too far over the top for me. The report on the combat mechanics and game-play only make things worse.
I'll wait for Serious Sam 3 and its 16 player co-op for an old style FPS to scratch my itch.

There's a lot of money to be made in the "Free to Play" MMO market. I think Nexon recently had a gang-buster year and a lot of growth with its free MMOs. Another thing to keep in mind is that many of these free MMOs don't have the really high production values like the traditional Pay to Play MMOs have usually had so there is less risk when investing in them.
I beg to differ sir, Vindictus has some of the best graphics on the market, an unique concept that's virtually untouched by every other MMO and it's free to play. There is money to be made by selling in-game items. Plus MMOs are a big deal in Korea and China; sport-like I would say, I would not be surprised if they had sponsors. When thousands of people visit your site daily and check your facebook page it's not hard to find people willing to pay for advertising space.
That's why I said "...many of these free MMOs don't have the really high production values..."
I've played Vindictus and it stands out among the free MMOs in terms of production values but it's rather unique in that sense. It was also released in a very piecemeal fashion with relatively little content at the outset which would have allowed the developers to stop working on it had it not been a success -- thereby mitigating a lot of risk that often goes into the normal AAA MMOs.
I'm not sure about the rest of your comment as it seems to agree with what I said

Question, there's no AA setting in-game that I can find, only AF. Do I have to force it via the card settings or do the "texture" and all those other things count as AA? I notice a little jaggy around the body/face models at times, in the non-dialogue screens, but nothing ugly.
There's a bit of a Vaseline blurry effect in the dialogue scenes that kind of bugs me tho, even w/all on High.
I noticed there was an entry in one of the ini files that had 'MSAA' set to 0. Setting it to 1 may enable AA.. or cause bad things to happen. I never tested it and no longer have the demo to try it out.
There are 3 ini files, two are located in the Steam data directory for the game and the third user.ini is located somewhere in the user's my documents directory. Any settings in the user.ini file seem to overwrite the settings found in the other two ini files.
There are some other graphical options that may reduce the blurry effect. I only messed with the resolution settings and left all the others untouched.

@faloowPL If you're unsure whether to buy it based on the demo then wait until full reviews come out with more information on the game. I think it's a little silly to have us forum dwellers try to help you decide when we probably don't have much more information than you do
If you don't think it's worth the full price then waiting for a price drop or a sale is always a valid plan.

There isn't any official confirmation but there is this
http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/06/07/vit...nger-exclusive/Interestingly, Tretton also wanted to move quickly on when presenter Geoff Keighley mentioned Agent. It’s still in development, and they’re still working with Rockstar, but couldn’t confirm it’s PS3 exclusive.Edit: Found a better source
JT: It's probably a better question for the Rockstar guys but Agent is in development. We still have every intention of working together.GK: Still exclusive to PS3 though?
JT: I'm not sure where we're going to end up on that. Again, that's probably a better question for Rockstar but I think we'll be very pleased with the PS3 offering when it comes to market.

To angle the camera using a KB/M hold the left alt + right mouse key and move the mouse. It's a little awkward as this causes your character to move at the same time but it works.
-
1-2-3; Q; you can; you can dodge instead of strafing- not the same, I know, but works just as well; you either press Esc twice or F (if you're on the inventory screen, obviously) once. All the buttons for fine control are in a neat package under your left hand within reaching distance.DS3 controls are counter intuitive. Where are my spells? how do I change stances? Why can't I move with the mouse? Why can't I strafe/ move properly with wsad? Why do I need to press ESC 4 times to exit the status screen?I think the biggest problem is that the demo doesn't do a good job of explaining the controls, especially if someone is coming in expecting a more traditional DS1/2 experience. I figured them out by the end of the demo but it wasn't until about half way through that I discovered how to dodge and use my skills . The lack of keyboard mapping didn't help either.

FO3 looks 100x better than ds3
anyone else here share this opinion?
Not me. The graphics have different strengths and weaknesses. DS3 being an action RPG with a fairly distant viewing camera doesn't show as well when zoomed in but it looks just fine and better in many respects than FO3 when not. A better comparison would be DA2 or Sacred2 both of which I think it compares favorably to.
-
And now lets compare a first person shooter with a game that is played in birds eye view!
FO3/ FONV are rpg's, not fps. FO3/FONV use dx9...
Crysis 2 also uses DX9.. or have they finally released the patch that uses newer versions?
-
No price point set?
-
Ah, there we go -- finally some hardcore stuff. They should have started out showing that it can handle the current generation of console graphics rather than the Wii looking demos they showed at first
-
Eh, still Wii level graphics? So much for the hardcore
-
Is Legend of Zelda going to be the only Wii announcement?
-
At that price point I'd much rather get the Vita over the 3Ds

no video out on the device?
Layoff hits Obsidian?

Both the tablet and desktop versions of Windows 8 will have the Metro UI. Metro specific applications will only be able to be installed from the app-store (unless you're a developer/enterprise user).
The version of Windows 8 that runs on ARM will only be compatible with Metro applications which means the only source of programs for that version will be the app-store.
The version of Windows 8 for desktop PCs will support regular windows applications which can be found and installed as normal. However, the app-store restriction on Metro specific applications still applies.
