Studies show that if a cat falls off the seventh floor of a building it has about thirty percent less chance of surviving than a cat that falls off the twentieth floor. It supposedly takes about eight floors for the cat to realize what is occurring, relax and correct itself. (How did they study this? Ummmm?)

    ...

It was a couple of NY vets who noticed the pattern in cats that had survived after falls from high buildings, then conducted an a posteriori inductive analysis to provide their hypothesis.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

  4. I think that may be an older version of the XM-8. I could be wrong. The ergonomics of the XM-8 look pretty good. Basically, the U.S. Army's plan is to rebuild the OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon) seen below:

    OICW-soldier2.jpg

The main problem with the weapon was that although it was light, it was bulky as all hell. Plus there were issues with the battery life for the scope and various onboard technology, so the project was scrapped. The XM-8 is basically the rifle portion of the OICW, but sized down and made more efficient. I believe they have started the second portion of the rifle which will be a 40mm automatic, yes I said it, automatic grenade launcher. This was orginally on the OICW and was mounted over the rifel itself. I guess they want to do away with breach loaded grenade launchers. Should be interesting.

Edit: It will also be using KE (Kinetic Energy) rounds which will pack a hell of a punch.

Actually, the XM-8 is a lightweight assault rifle derived from H&K's 5.56 modified G36K that constitutes the core of their XM-29 SABR prototypes. The XM-29 is H&K's entrant for the OICW program. The other part of the XM-29 is a 20mm semi automatic cannon (not necessarily a grenade launcher) capable of firing different types of ordnance. The greatest advance in this respect is that the 20mm ammunition carries an on-board computer that enables the round to be detonated mid-air or right after the penetration of soft defenses (glass) at the user's whim.

However, and while it's an overall cheaper weapon than its counterpart the M16/M203 (equipped with laser sight and whatnot), elements within the US military have suggested equipping the existing M16 and M4 with the new 20mm cannon to reduce costs. Also, there is concern as to whether light assault vehicles would be more efficient at performing the same tasks as a soldier equipped with the XM-29, due to the weapon's effective range.

It's also noteworthy that the XM-29 was not the only prototype to be considered for the OICW. AAI also produced a more compact prototype, but it was discarded due to their reliance on flechette ammunition that, while very efficient, loses accuracy greatly at longer ranges.

    Thanks for the correction.

  6. Walsingham, that has got to be one of the strangest looking weapons I have ever seen. But judging by the specs, it sounds like a good one.

I agree it looks odd, but that's because everything you need is inside the box. Another good feature is that you've got less to snag on your kit, bits of tree, or collect mud.

And, so I don't seem unsympathetic to you Big Bang heads:

A grenade machine gun. Fully auto grenade fire. The idea dates back to the Soviets in the 80s (I think). They asked around and decided that in a small group fire fight, the side who fired first with the most would win, so they gave spetsnaz teams these crazy suckers. H&K just loved the idea, I guess...

BTW, I read just now that the XM8 will be about 25,000 dollars per item. I'd rather have that money myself and make do with a czech rifle. Hell, most of the countries we end up in, you'd be better off taking the cash and bribing the opposition to go away!

That thing is sweet. That right there is the Mk19 automatic grenade launcher. I've seen videos of those babies in action, and it is definitely a sight to see :D For the most part, we mount them on HMMWV's, as well as the M2 50 Cal.

  7. Yeah, it's actually fake. Although John Crapper was a real man, and he did own a plumbing company until it went down the drain (HAHAHA :D ) Get it. Went down the drain. Yeah.......Anyway, more useless info:

  8. Well, gee, Mister Joe they said MONTHS AGO that they were going to release the movies and music patch.  When they said it they said it was going to be release in a few days.  Like I said that was MONTHS AGO.  I don't want to be overly critical of Obsidian for I think they are a bunch of great guys but don't say something is going to be released when it isn't going to be.

You lose credibility like that.  Right now I am thinking that I should save my money and skip NWN 2 and I don't want to think that way.

I agree. Obsidian is making itself appear to have integrity issues. But the people that really have integrity issues are those that work at LA. I'm pretty much done with KOTOR 2, and I most likely won't play it until this patch, or the restoration project, is released.

  9. As in the book:

  11. Speaking of Kalashnikov, I know the yanks built a special Afghanistan model M16 that fired the 7.62x39mm round because the soldiers couldnt be bothered to just pick up an Ak-47

I'm not entirely sure, I'm going to look into this some more, but I think it is due to uniformity. They want everyone carrying and firing the same type of weapon, plus they probably don't want a bunch of guys running around with Ak-47's because that's not our issued weapon. Or who knows, perhaps the military is testing to see if they should switch over to 7.62 for the M16 series. That would be sweet. :D

But then again, the M16/M4 series are up for replacement with the M-8, which is yet another 5.56x45mm weapon.

  12. Yeah, the C7 (M16 variant) I had in the army replaced our old 7.62 using HK G3. 5.56 rounds just feels like you're firing a damn toygun. <_<

I'd imagine it would. I just looked up the C7, and it's actually a pretty good looking weapon. I couldn't believe that it has automatic fire on it instead of 3-round burst. I couldn't find too much on attachments for the weapon though. Does it have an attachment like the M203 40mm grenade launcher?

You know, I once asked my Lt why we didn't have 3-round burst on em, and he just answered "this isn't some shoot em up game" - so I actually didn't think that burst was used anywhere after that. However, we never got to fire full auto anyway, they said it was too inaccurate to use properly. We did get to do it on rare occations though, feels awesome.

As for upgrades, it's kinda ironic, the Home Guard (a militia like your National Guard) is better equipped and has access to an M203 launcher, however the army does not. Our Special Forces called 'Jaegers' use the same gun as you posted in your initial post though, which is pretty freaking cool. ;)

Interesting. Thanks for the info

  13. Yeah, the C7 (M16 variant) I had in the army replaced our old 7.62 using HK G3. 5.56 rounds just feels like you're firing a damn toygun. <_<

  14. Yeah, Ak's are pretty good weapons. I wish that the U.S. military would use 7.62 as their standard round rather than 5.56, but oh well. Anyway, here's the M240B, which is a replacement for the M60. Fires good ol' 7.62 rounds.
