it was the sound card for me. i checked "disable sounds" in the configure menu, and the game started. went to dxdiag, in the sound tabs, and set sound acceleration to full. game starts with sound now. this is a sb live card, driver date is 2001, but the update feature on creative's website says there is no updated drivers available. *shrug*
