How would I go about building a ranged/melee hybrid

I'm wanting to make a build that typically opens up with a ranged attack using a pistol or arquebus and then switching to melee. I have a few ideas for to do that involving a black jacket fighter, rogue, ranger, or various multiclass options but I'd like to hear from all of you. How would you recommend I do this and where would you put your points in for stats?
