I think Rymrgand's quest is a nod to "Entropy" by Thomas Pynchon. "Entropy" tells the story of a couple who are scared of universal heath death. Therefore, they shut themselves inside their apartment and put the heater on full. The story ends when they break the window, allowing the heat of the room to escape.
