Frequent graphics freezes while game continues to run

I'm exploring the 6th level of the paths (I think, it's the first level in which you encounter skeletal opponents), and I am experiencing an error where the graphics will freeze very frequently. I believe the game is continuing to run normally aside from this, since I can still hear everything happening (music still going, menu opens/closes when I press escape), but the display is totally frozen.

 

Is there any way to fix this, and/or is this a known issue? It's so frequent that I usually can't even finish an encounter before it freezes and I am forced to alt-tab and force close the program. Essentially, it's unplayable until I can get a fix for this, unless I can manage to leave this map and the freezes stop occurring- and even then, it's kind of crappy that I can't access the paths.

 

Please, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
