Obsidian is neither black, nor hard, nor a rock. It's volcanic glass, it has a hardness is 5 - 5.5 (much softer than quartz), and it's transparent when in thin pieces. It's also the official Smoking Mirror of Tezcatlipoca, the god of Night and Sorcery.
