Blank screen after intro movie

I'm writing this here and now to help anyone who may be in the same situation I was in two days ago.

 

I just bought KOTORII, brought it home, installed it and started playing. I got through character creation and the intro movies and then... the dreaded black screen with music that I've since discovered so many people have experienced. Tech support and the forums offered few solutions: the most common comment on the forums was something like, "Sorry, I can't help you with that."
