For those of you who remember the terrific Shalebridge Cradle from (the now defunct) Ion Storm's Thief: Deadly Shadows, you might be interested in this excellent article [6 MB] "Journey into the Cradle", written by Kieron Gillen, which covers creation, thoughts, and most importantly, an interview with Lead Designer Jordan Thomas. Just amazing I tell ya!

However, if you haven't played the game yet but plan to do it, don't read it... it's spoilerish.
