Crash at Half Loading

This is more of a heavy irritation than a show-stopper, but it happens consistently:

 

Every time I load KOTOR2, if I try to play a saved game immediately, it crashes with the status bar halfway across the Loading screen. The screen turns lighter, and I get the XP "Send Error Report?" dialog.

 

I'm running in 1280x1024, my LCD's native resolution, and prefer to not run in anything else, on account of general blurry funkiness. If, however, I try starting the game in, say, 800x600, it loads fine. After that point, I can quit the current game, change the resolution back to 1280x1024, and it works perfectly.

 

This, however, is extremely irritating to do every time. I know there are oodles of problems with ATI cards, but has anyone else run into this one? Perhaps have a fix to recommend?
