Sound issues not allowing game to start

Hi, I am having issues trying to get kotor2 to start. If I disable sound in the launcher config menu it runs but I am unwilling to play the game without sound. Software sound does not help. I downloaded the latest drivers. My previous sound card died so I am running off of the nvidia nforce2 onboard sound. The sound in the menu works fine but the game wont start.... it wont even blackscreen. I have tweeked dozens of settings in the control panel sound option to no avail... any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
