So I searched through 1990’s references to Axl and found Home Alone wiki that says Buzz McAllister’s tarantula (unnamed in movie) is named Axl in the novelization.

It can also refer to a simple play on words, such as Arachnid Extra Large (AxL).
Axel is a funny name for this enormous monster.
