Avowed crashing on loading screen after patch

Game takes ten plus minutes to load on startup. Each subsequent load screen during the game takes about five minutes. Every so often it crashes during one of these loads. The game is uplayable. My PC is two years old and is recommending me to run on the highest settings. I set the settings much lower but still have this issue.
